@blushink: I have worked at the location for 6 years but have only been with supervisor for 2 years and this group for 1 year. I am moving in academia so the classes start January 16th and I need to prep for the semester. So we are looking at giving notice next week and being done before christmas and be unpaid for 1 month OR waiting Jan 3 so I can get the Jan 2nd holiday and my bonus from last year. Then take leave maybe for christmas.

How long have your worked there? Two weeks is fine, but if you've worked there longer than 10 years, I think 1 week per year might be a nice thing to offer (unless they say 2 weeks is fine)

I wouldn't feel badly at all! I would accept the offer and tell them you're going to a competitor, even if you aren't. Will they tell you to just pack your stuff and leave and still pay you for the two weeks?

I hate these situations because I always feel the same way leaving the people I work with. But the previous posters are right, that you have to do the right thing for your family, and you know what, whenever I've left a job, things tend to sort themselves out there too. Other people may also move on, the people who you were closest with, or the manager may change and the environment get better.

Congratulations on the new offer! I think it's normal to feel kinda bad, but this is also very exciting :)

Congratulations on the new job! I always feel bad when it's time to move on - job, hair dresser, etc. But, I realize that I need to look out for myself. If a boss decided that the position wasn't right for the person in it they would have no problem finding a replacement - same with you...you needed to find a new position to fit your needs! Good luck with your new job - it sounds like a good decision for yourself and your family.

Congratulations on your new job! While, I'd feel bad in your situation, I agree with PPs that you have to put yourself first! Sometimes it's not about others, but your own career path that needs to be the main focus!

Congrats!!!
It's always scary to move on but it sounds like it's a decision worth making.
Don't feel bad, your manager makes decisions based on the welfare of the company and not always the individual, that doesn't mean you can't make a decision for the benefit of yourself and not the company.

Thanks guys. I think right now what is really bugging me is that I am sitting on it (I just got the offer and haven't put in my 2 weeks notice). So I have to keep pretending that I am not leaving.

Yep, you need to put yourself first. It sucks, but I am sure no one in your position would blame you.

It's hard to leave a job where you actually like the people! I had to do that too, and it did suck. I loved my boss and all my coworkers. But the actual job itself was soooooo stressful and hard on my body and me emotionally. And it just so happened to be during a time full of lay offs, so they were already short on staff (which is why I was sooooo stressed!).

But in the end, I had to do what is right for me. And my boss totally understood that. She even offered to help me find a less stressful job in the company.

So, I got offered a job that I really want. There is no reason not to take it so I will be accepting. Thing is at my current job, I hate my actual supervisor but not the group I work for now. I feel bad just giving them 2 weeks notice and walking away. I was making plans for the future and this will probably come as a shock to them. I know I am making the right decisions for me and my family. It is just kinda sad too. I wish were I am right now could have stepped up and made some changes so staying would have been an option.
