@Sams Mom: Congratulations! I'd go to the second interview for sure, until the paperwork is all signed with an accepted offer things could absolutely fall through. Plus who knows, there could be something amazing that hasn't come up yet with the second choice that would sway you!

I have a second interview scheduled for tomorrow around lunch for a place I liked, but wasn't my top choice. I was offered a job this afternoon/evening by my first choice employer; but haven't accepted yet.

Should I call first thing and cancel the interview? Or go ahead and go and "see what happens"?

@foodiebee: Did I write that wrong? I recommend it, I'm agreeing with the other posters. I recommended against the husband part (but I see that's a regional thing, it would be pretty odd here) and against countering salary twice, instead suggesting the second counter should consider the other benefits and non-salaried pay.

@karenbme: the tuition interests me because I would like to get my RN some day (start out ASN and bridge to BSN), this hospital network provider up to 1500 a year in tuition reimbursement. I know it's not a ton, but I can't be a full time student right now anyways. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Also, I've never worked anywhere with ETO, it was always just you get X amount and that's it. This place starts you at 5 hours every 80 hours and goes up from there.

@Sams Mom: Tuition benefits would be more valuable if you had required professional development for a certification or you were planning to go back to school. Really anything is negotiable, flex time/work from home, whatever would make what they're offering work. The money question is literally the worst, though. My strategy has always been to put off answering as long as possible, "I'm looking for something that fits my skills and how I want to grow, and feel like I'd have to consider the full package were an offer to be made." A couple times I've gotten push back and been asked to give a range, but I keep it broad. The recruiter I work with hates people like this, but was the recruiter on the team that hired me, so clearly not that badly. If a candidate says this to me I think they're smart, but I'm biased.

@foodiebee: I was definitely caught off guard when they asked me about money. I told them what I needed, but then also said to not totally discount me for that. Which probably shot holes in me. I hate hate hate job hunting

Thank you everyone.

The taking to your spouse in my area is pretty common response from talking to my friends. But we're in the Bible belt too 🤷🏼‍♀️

@karenbme: thanks for the link! It's kind of stressful trying to figure out what I want from 2 different jobs. They're both shifts into medical stuff, but one is still A/R which I won't mind being a small part of the scope of the companies money. The other being in an actual medical office, which had great benefits, but won't pay as much. I don't know how exactly to weight college credit reimbursement, plenty of ETO vs more money in general.

@Sams Mom: You definitely have time to think it over. Don't give a reason why unless they ask for one, say something along the lines of, "I'd like some time to think it over, is it alright if I take XX?" where XX is filled in with however long you think it's going to take the other place to make an offer. In my (somewhat limited) experience a week is pretty standard, but I wouldn't rescind an offer if someone I liked wanted 2 weeks.

As others have said, do your research on salary and know your worth independent of the ranges they offer. BLS (https://www.bls.gov/data/) publishes national and market level data on hundreds of job titles and I'd be shocked if medical receptionist isn't on the list, and tools like glassdoor can give you company or area specific info as well.

With respect to what to ask for, a piece of advice that I read that's stuck with me is say the largest number you can say with a straight face. A colleague of my husband's did the extreme version of that, and said a number that even he thought was ridiculous (in part because the offer meant moving his family cross-country and his wife needing to change jobs as well) and the company didn't even counter. He works in a very competitive field, though, so grain of salt. You can counter once, and as others have said if you want to counter again go for something benefits related (ex. additional paid time off, education benefits). I have an extra week of vacation relative to everyone else I work with because I was at the top of my salary band, but the company was willing to add vacation.

I would also ask when they need an answer by.

I would NOT say anything about talking over a job offer with my husband. They are hiring you, not him, and it doesn't make you look very confident. (But of course, everyone talks job offers over with their spouses.) You do not need to clarify why you need time to consider an offer.

I would not counter the salary twice, but if they came back with a counter and it was unacceptable, I would look for different ways to counter - is there a bonus %? vacation days? negotiate a work from home day?

@Sams Mom: When I last changed jobs, I had to supply a number that I needed, and I did some research on base pay in my field and went with that. When they offered, I asked if they were able to negotiate on anything, they told me where they could wiggle and where they couldn't, and I asked when they needed a response by. Telling myself that this is standard practice and expected helped me feel more comfortable doing it (because I feel a lot like you!). In fact, they might even be more surprised if I didn't negotiate.

@MamaG: one of the jobs asked what I wanted, which made me uncomfortable because I feel like throwing a number out first is at a disadvantage.

The other one gave me the base+experience rates.

Were you asked to supply compensation information? It’s a standard practice I have with our recruiting team when they do a screening interview. I’m supplied that information as a hiring manager. I don’t negotiate. I make my best offer based on what people have requested. I recently offered someone exactly what they requested. They countered and I held firm in my offer.

Also know the competitive nature of the market if they can easily fill the role you don’t have much negotiating power.

@JennyPenny: I was going to go the "I need to talk it over with my husband, can I get back with you tomorrow?" route... But that is more direct. Not that I wouldn't actually be talking it over with my husband.

I can talk, interviews make me a little nervous, but they don't bother me like this. I'm stress sweating over having to talk money 🤦🏼‍♀️

@Lindsay05: the only reason I think there might be a third (haven't had a second interview) is because when I told her I interviewed with another office in the company she told me to call her if they give an offer, and she would check with their hiring manager on my status with them. 🤷🏼‍♀️

But thanks for the advice. I assumed you could take your time and not have to answer immediately, just didn't know if that's standard. I am also heavily afflicted with the "money talk is taboo" mindset... Even though you have to talk money to get a job 🤦🏼‍♀️

Personally, when applying for jobs I've asked when they need an answer by and its usually within a few days/by the end of the week. The company I'm at now typically offers 48 hours for the candidate to accept or decline. So I'd recommend asking when they need an answer by but I wouldn't expect it to be too long.

Definitely take some time to think about offer. Know your worth. Come up with a number that you know you would need to make it worthwhile. Crunch all the numbers. Factor in all the pros/cons of each. Counter above what you would want. It is always so scary but consider it a good problem that you have so many options. Good luck!

Ok ladies, I need some help here.

I was laid off almost 2 weeks ago. I took the opportunity to switch my field a little (same job, different field).

I have absolutely zero experience in fielding job offers. I have a feeling it will come down to 2 jobs, MAYBE 3, offering me a position. In the past I have literally applied for 1 job, received an offer, and accepted.

Here is my question:

1) I have no chill, this is the first time I've been out of work not by my choice. What do I say to the first person? All I allowed to take some time?

2) How much time to "think"? Aka wait for other offer.

3) negotiating pay... I know they can counter my counter... But what percentage is too much to counter? Can you only counter once? Twice?

Ugggghhhhhh

I don't want to just jump on the first job, but I also really need a job 🤦🏼‍♀️
