I don't put much stock into job titles. In my industry, it can vary so much by company - for example, an "Associate" in one company is an entry level position, but in my company, it is three levels under VP (and there are 9 levels). Years experience and job responsibilities are the focus on resumes because titles can vary so much.

Titles are important when you think about changing jobs....coordinator may not have the same draw to it as leader or manager, ya know? But that's why you can talk about what your tasks are :)

We have a coordinator on my team, and she is a high level admin with a lot more tasks that anyone would care to know about!

Ok. Excellent point. I love what I do, whatever it's called, and I'm paid well to do it.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I guess partly I coordinate, but I always assumed that if you have people reporting directly to you, and only you, you are their manager....

I'm also confused because the guy that does the same thing for the construction guys is the "Construction Manager". But he reports directly to our President. I report to the Environment "Operations Manager".

Maybe I take myself too seriously! Wahahahahaha

@Sapphiresun: ok. This sounds similar to what I actually do. I report directly to an Operations Manager.

@looch: I work in oil and gas, pipelines, specifically. I "coordinate" field people who report to me, make sure they are doing what they're supposed to be doing, collecting appropriate samples, recording appropriate data, submitting it in a timely manner, and supporting all their needs (regulatory questions, who to approach in the field for equipment support, I guide on site responses to spills and other emergencies).

What tasks make a manager?

@JennyD: "coordinator" has always madee confused. I was the marketing coordinator for a rape crisis clinic for a few years. Other than working alongside the Director, I didn't have anyone to report to and did my own thing. I designed their annual reports & marketing material, so a better title would have been "lead designer" since I was the ONLY designer.

Because of that job experience I always stop and wonder when someone says they're a coordinator!

I honestly have no idea what your position would entail...when I read "coordinator" it looked to me like it might involve some event planning?

Not all people that have direct reports have "manager" in their job title. Some people are product managers, for example.

When I was a coordinator, it was a mid-level position. I didn't supervise anyone (I would have been a manager if I had) but I reported directly to the director. I guess it was sort of outside the hierarchy that way -- I worked with managers but didn't have to answer to them even though I wasn't at the same pay grade as them. This was in nonprofit administration.

I'm a coordinator in my job. I supervise 30 volunteers, and create crime prevention programming for them to execute, but I'm not technically a manager. But I work for local government, so true management are non-union. I'm essentially one of the highest non-exempt jobs, so not entry level, but not management either.

I really think it can very a lot by industry and company - for that reason it's so hard to figure out the real job when job searching, but do agree that some companies use it in lieu of admin.

The coordinators at my company aren't management, but merely coordinate tasks, patients and assignments. Nobody answers to them though. I don't think of it as entry-level (you have to have experience to be a care coordinator here), but I don't think of it as management.

In the industry I used to work in (marketing/advertising) if you had "coordinator" in your title you were an admin/assistant/entry level person! So when I hear "coordinator" that's what I think of!

I had the title "coordinator" when I was in charge of the plant lab. I had 10 people reporting directly to me, but I wasn't part of the management team. (I reported to the manager, but I was her only direct report.). I think some companies use it instead of supervisor now. I don't think of it as an admin position.

I'm just curious what other people think about my job title.

My husband asked me the other day what my title actually is. I am an "Environmental Coordinator". He says all the "Coordinators" he has ever worked with are basically admins. I am not in any way, shape or form an admin. I think what I do is very clearly management. I have a crew of field staff who report directly to me. I write policy that they abide by. My field staff and my clients call me for expertise in my field. And I just noticed that a colleague who does the equivalent job for our construction division is called a "Construction Manager". He is also a man (important? I hope not...)

Is it important? Am I insane? What do you think of the "Coordinator" title?
