When I decided to run my own business full time, I was certain I wouldn't go back to working a regular 9-5. It's a lot of work but I wouldn't trade it for a second.

Even though I have always worked in the field I majored in college I realized I had a career when I earned my last promotion. That solidified in my mind that what I do impacts the company in a positive way.

I think you can say you're in a career when you would be hired for your expertise. I started out in a job, any job, in my chosen field, but now I am much more selective in assignments I take on. I am very specialized right now.

@mrs. wagon: My career started in a similar way.

I wanted the summer off after high school instead of going to university. My mom said N-to the -O. So she got me a job as a receptionist at her office for experience. I had to answer phones for one of the men renting an office in my mom's space, and he, I guess, saw potential in me and hired me as his assistant. He brought me to the company I'm working for now. I started here, cleaning out an office of a man who left suddenly. Which was filthy. After the office was cleaned, they ended up keeping me on in a specific field and I shadowed the girl here, at the time.

Now, 9 years later, I'm the only one here who does my job and I'm currently finishing my courses to get an "official" title.

I happened to stumble into an internship that became a part time job in a very specific field, so I knew that was probably the beginning of my career. It was the summer after I graduated from high school! The internship began as a very basic office job to gain experience (the task on my first day was to re-order the mailbox slots to be alphabetical!) but a few months later, the department I was interning for was eliminated. Instead of getting rid of me, they transferred me... I started managing server inventory and maintenance, then I began building servers!

I guess after 2 years and getting promoted, I decided that I'm definitely staying in this field and building a career where I have goals of where I want to be in x years.

I've had many jobs - work that I didn't really feel I had a future in, just paying the bills at the time. I'm just getting started in my new career - I've finished school, taken my board exams, in the process of getting registered. This is something that I want to do for a long time.

I suppose it had to do with the schooling I had to take in order to get into my profession. Once I got a job within my field, I had no intentions of ever leaving, thus I started my career.

For me it was when I was part of a compensation review and I realized that I fit into the Professional category and am no longer considered to be administrative. Also, when I had people to manage and it wasn't just making sure they show up to work on time or don't overtake their vacation, and was more about career development, etc.

With my first internship in college....."jobs" to me were things like summer positions waiting tables, being a lifeguard, catering, etc. Anything with "engineering" in my title has been part of my career. And even if i change careers, I'll still look at this time period as a career. A career is something I cultivate and nurture...
