We have joint checking and saving accounts that we use to pay for all household and child care expenses. In addition we each have our own checking and savings too. A small amount from each paycheck is deposited into them. It works well for us since I always know bills are covered and DH and I are free to spend our personal money however we choose. We have very different spending habits and it alleviates any issues.

We keep things mostly separate. We each pay certain bills/expenses. Even though our money is kept separate we still discuss bigger purchases as it affects the family budget. It works good for us. Like someone said above it is kind of nice to go out and one person be “treated” to dinner.

Separate save for one joint credit card that collect travel rewards. We put all major purchases towards that and then we both pay to keto the balance down. We got a joint chequing account when we got married intending on combining but found we both preferred to keep our finances somewhat separate. It’s not stressful at all and we both finds it feels like more of a “treat” when one of us picks up a dinner tab for the other etc. He also had a parent die young and very suddenly and his Mom ran into issues because of lack or credit and losing account access so it’s really important to him that I have separate money and accounts to access in an emergency.

I think of it as joint but my paycheck actually goes into my personal account and I transfer what I need to pay bills to our joint. My DHs paycheck goes into our joint and then he gets like $50 a check transferred to his personal account. So technically I could be hiding away money if I wanted to haha but I pay all the bills and consider anything in my personal account joint money. It’s only that way bc it was going to be a pain to change my direct deposit after we got married.

We also have each have credit cards the other doesn’t have access to which is nice for gift giving.

Ours is separate. We do have a joint account that we use for funneling money back and forth, but we each have all of our pre-marriage accounts that we’ve kept too. We have different spending habits/priorities so it works better this way for us.

We have a combined account we pay everything out of, as well as combined long term savings and short term savings. Each of us has our own chequing accounts which are pretty much always at $0 unless we get individual money as a gift or something. We don’t police what the other spends but we do have separate credit cards (and a joint one too) so if I want to hide a gift, I buy on my cc. Pretty much everything goes on our credit cards other than the mortgage and car payments so we get lots of points as they are all combined to one points plan. DW does all the money managing. I usually get a couple bonuses per year and they go in our short term savings for something big we wanna buy for the family.

I don’t know anyone who keeps things separate other than my brother and his wife and it’s a bit weird because she makes way more than him and just spends it all so they never seem to have any money 🤨 I’m a big fan of what’s yours is mine when people are in relationships/marriages.

Combined, it's just so much easier. We did separate for a few years while living together but not married and it was a PAIN. I mean it worked, we split rent, i paid my stuff he paid his stuff and then one paid electric and the other paid tv and we'd alternate groceries.

Once we got married we got joint everything and oh my it's so much easier!!! I do still have my own checking acct that a small amount goes into each paycheck for my "play money" which i basically use on lunch every day at work. DH has a paypal acct and a ccard bc he tends to always have some side hustle he's running with his friend so he uses those for that but everything else is together.

All combined. We allocate our pay to savings and retirement accounts first, then what's left is free for us to spend. We're both super frugal so our spending account never goes so low that we butt heads with wanting to spend it a certain way.

Combined! It works for us and we’ve never had issues. I SAH but I don’t feel like I need his “permission” to spend money, but we do run larger (greater than $100) purchases past each other. We have a combined credit card too, but I have a separate one from before we were married that has no annual fee that I keep around just for bday and Christmas purchases for him.

@cake2017: so if we go out to dinner he typically will pick it up, unless it's been a particularly expensive month for him - paying preschool or hockey dues or whatever, then I'll pick it up - we're usually pretty aware of each others financial state, haha... And yes, we save separately. although most of his savings is currently going into 529's for our children, and he's paying a lot more towards his retirement.

We have joint accounts for basically everything, though I have a credit card that's just in my name from way back that I never got around to adding him to when we got married. (It does come in handy for gifts! I kind of wish he had a card that I wouldn't see purchases on...I almost always figure out his "surprises" ahead of time! Oops.) My husband handles our long term financial stuff and I handle the day-to-day spending/budgeting, so having everything combined works well for us in general though.

Our paychecks get deposited into separate accounts and then we keep a bit for ourselves and transfer the rest into our joint. I love this set up. It affords me some anonymity with spending like I don't have to explain why I spent 50 bucks at Eczema Honey.

We have seperate chequing and divide the bills up roughly in terms of a ratio of the income that we each make. Then we each our own personal savings for our own goals, as well as a joint savings for long term savings. It works well for us.

We have a joint account. We were very young when we got married so it worked well. However my husband is a small business owner so he also has a separate account. The joint account includes my paycheck, rent from our tenants, plus whatever we need to transfer from DH business account to cover our largest expenses (car payments and mortgages; we don’t need to transfer every month). We use the joint account for all family and household expenses, including my credit card which is used for basically all our purchases (save the farmers market where I use cash). DH also has his own credit card he uses for business expenses.

Joint, but I have a small business so I kept my accounts for that when we got married. It helps for accounting to keep it separate. I do pay myself every month into our joint account.
We pay for almost everything on our separate credit cards. Allows me to build my credit and we are both responsible for putting all expenses into a joint budgeting app. But around Christmas it's easier to hide purchases because we each use our own credit card and put it in the budget after it's opened. The expense comes out of our personal flex spending so it doesn't throw off our whole budget.

We have combined checking and savings accounts, as well as a joint credit card for all purchases. We didn't combine until I got pregnant and at that point the plan was for me to stay home once she was born, so it seemed easier to just combine them then. I handle the finances and all bill paying and it's just easier to not have separate accounts.

We do still each have a credit card from before we were together (don't want to close them since they are our oldest lines of credit) We use those for gifts if we want them to be a surprise.

We have combined checking/savings account and then we each have individual checking/savings accounts. We each get a set $ amount out of each check to do with as we please and then rest goes into the joint accounts. Gifts for the other person are paid for out of the individual accounts. If we buy lunch at work instead of packing one, that gets paid for out of the individual accounts. DH is very good about packing a lunch and has a significant amount in his personal savings account... me, not so much :silly:

Hi!
I’ve had this convo with so many coworkers, friends, family....

Do you and DH have combined or separate accounts? If you have separate how do you all determine who, what and how much etc?

We have combined. It works so well and we don’t dispute about finances. Both paychecks go into one account and we pay everything from it. If i want something i get it and same for dh.

The only issue is christmas and birthdays lol cause we can see the account online. Therefore we withdraw cash so we don’t know!!!😜

What do you guys do?!
