Noticing a huge difference in our pup's mobility! I think I'm going to stop the anti inflammatory pills. Continue with the Dasuquin at 2x a day for another few weeks then drop to once a day.

Thanks all!

Schedule some regular walks in and help her shed some LBs and we should be in a good spot!

@fmmtk: thanks for the reco. We brought that up to our vet and she said Dasuquin with MSM is exactly what she would've suggested. It just arrived today from Amazon and I've given our pup one so far.

She was also prescribed a anti inflammatory / pain reliever pill. We have been giving her half a dose every 24 hours. It's only been 48 and already we see a huge improvement in her movement. Vet said she has pretty bad arthritis in her hind legs. First order of business is getting her more comfortable with the pills then lose some weight. If that doesn't work she said there are laser treatments that are very effective. Hopefully we don't have to go there because it's pretty pricey.

@sarac: In all fairness, pain relief meds won't fix the problem either, only mask the symptoms. For something like arthritis or dysplasia, you're looking at surgery if you want a true fix, or at the very least, weight loss/strength building.

For sure take him to the vet and get some kind of pain relief. Natural stuff won't really fix the problem.

If you have trouble getting your dog to take the glucosamine pills, there's a brand that makes jerky treats with it in them. I don't remember the brand right now. Our dog loves them. Heads up though, it made her poo runny and gross!

Yet another vote for glucosamine chondroitin! My pup started having back trouble when he was 10, and it was pretty bad - he could barely move his back legs for a while. Our vet prescribed this and he was back on his feet in a week, and then kept taking the pills to prevent the problem from coming back.

It comes in these capsules and must taste pretty good, he'd wolf them down and I never had to hide them in food.

I guess everybody else here has said it, but glucosamine and fish oil pills really helped my mom's dog as she aged. We also spoiled her and got one of those memory foam dog beds for the floor when she had trouble jumping on my mom's bed, where she used to sleep.

Dasuquin with MSM was a life changer for our dog who is 9 as well. We started her on it about a year ago and her quality of life has drastically improved. She acts like a puppy again! We purchase it from Amazon which is about half the price of our veterinarians office.

Glucosamine is what we use. But on really bad days (before we go hiking etc), we will give him a baby aspirin for relief. And then for us it is most important that he doesn't gain any weight and even loses some to be on the skinny side.

Glucosamine Chondritin pills worked wonders on our senior dog. They are human grade and you can buy at any drug store.

We had our pup on glucosoamine, fish oil pills, and had a prescription for Rimadyl before she passed. And remember that dogs are almost always in more pain than they show. If they look like they're having trouble getting comfortable when laying down, they're likely in a good amount of pain.

Glucosamine is probably the most common, and it's readily available and not overly expensive. Hopefully your vet will be able to give you other suggestions.

Our pup is almost 9 years old and in the past month her back hind legs are really starting to bother her. It's hard for her to get up from laying down. We think it's just old age arthritis or hip/joint pain.

Are there any natural remedies that will help alleviate some of the discomfort?

We've got her yearly check up next week and the vet will take a look to make sure there isn't something else going on!
