Thanks for the great discussion on this. The info I'm pulling is from a daycare center's menu online. I plan on visiting the site at some point and asking about the excessive juice and if offering water would be a problem.

@Mrs.Pinecone316: right. This is something to consider as I want her to stay wherever we move her to until she is 5. She is 2 now. The current center she is in offers juice 3x/week and they give her water when the other kids get juice.

1.) Yes, once a week with snack.
2.) I have them give her water and bring in a pouch or something else for her to have. I let her have juice for special occasions but I prefer to be the one to give it to her :)
3.) Nope and while it's not ideal that they serve juice I wouldn't view it as a deal breaker by any means! I am sure they would have no issue giving water!

1) No, they only serve water at snack times. In fact, there was apple juice yesterday morning for the Grandparent's breakfast and the kids were like "JUICE?!?!". I explained it's a "special occasion" and I limited it to one glass (I teach preschool at my son's center).
2) Yes, it should be no problem at all to give water!
3) No, you are not weird at all. Offer to bring in a full water bottle each day, if you want. We have children who bring in lactose-free milk and that's easily served to them at breakfast/lunch.

I totally understand you not wanting juice if thats what you do at home. How old is your LO? I think the biggest problem would be if they were old enough to hear that the other kids have juice and they don't and that causing problems keeping everyone happy for the day care providers. If LO is still young to not know the different I don't think it would be a problem.

Juice is full of sugar. I just read an article the other day that called it candy water. If my daycare gives something I don't want DS to have, I just tell them nope and they stop serving it.

I would honestly not use a center that has that kind of attitude about feeding if I had any other choice. If they think that juice and fruit are equivalent, what other kind of suspect food choices are they making?

As people have pointed out, it's a bad idea to single your child out and to make them feel like the odd one. I'd try to avoid that if possible, but man. I would just never let anyone feed my child juice twice a day. Twice! Once, I could maybe calm down about. Maybe. But twice!

I would just ask to substitute with water or milk. Our daycare had a communal pitcher of milk for all the kids but we brought our own milk substitute when she had a milk sensitivity and it wasn't a problem for them to give it to her.

1. No, never. Heck, they even had to cancel a planned art activity that used kool-aid powder to paint with because parents were worried their kids might have an isolated kool-aid powder eating incident (lol)

2. Yes; they should provide water.

3. NO, not weird at all. We only give juice as a special treat (aka, bribe) so I don't want daycare coming and taking my bribery tool away! Plus, they don't need juice at this age, so it's not like you are saying not to feed her veggies or something.

I am not comfortable with letting my DD drink juice everyday so I don't think it's a strange request to ask for water or milk. Once in a while at a party is okay but drinking that daily is excessive.

Yes
Yes
No.

My son's daycare has self-service drinks for the kids. They have two types of juice, milk and water and they can help themselves all day long. I have tried to tell DS to only drink milk or water, but of course I can't control what he's doing. But culturally, it seems that people here are much more inclined to give kids juice than in the US. We very rarely have it at home, so I just kind of shrug it off for daycare.

1. No, its not weird. At the center I worked at we used very diluted juice, but it was still juice.

2. Yes, they can easily provide water. The only problem will be if the kids serve themselves from a pitcher at the table (our 3-5 year olds did this) and your child is the only one getting just water, she may feel singled out since she wont be able to participate.

3. No, I don't think it is weird at all, and I would probably do the same thing. If it is very diluted, I may let it go, especially if my kid would feel very left out and wasn't old enough to understand. But straight up juice I would definitely say no, just like I wouldn't want him eating a candy bar for snack every afternoon. It would make me question their other snack choices too...

1. Does your childcare center offer juice at snack times?
2. Is it acceptable to think the daycare could easily provide water instead of juice for a child if the parent requested that?
3. Do you think I'm weird for saying "no juice" for my child?

In searching for other centers, I found one I liked but they offer juice at every single afternoon snack and also at most morning snack times. This seems excessive to me. We don't drink juice at home (our kiddo has only had milk and water) so I don't think she should have it at daycare, either.

What are your thoughts? Do you think I'm a weird parent for telling daycare my kid doesn't drink juice?

My main concern for no juice is cavities, in case you're wondering. :)
