My husband is a doc and he always suggests apple juice, although some of his coworkers prefer Karo syrup. If you do pear juice, be warned the only place I could find pear juice and not pear juice cocktail, when I wa doing a total elimination diet for breastfeeding, was at our local health food coop. My good friend always dices prunes and gives them as finger food to her toddlers when they are constipated and it works almost instantaneously.
I am glad I opened this thread and am going to keep an eye out for the prune/apple Gerber bottles now just in case we need them.

Apple juice did the trick for my LO. Diluted with water and she hasn't had an issue since. Prunes and pears did nothing for her.

Another non-juice suggestion, but we have been using these to keep things moving: http://www.mommypotamus.com/constipation-candy/

My LO has the same problem. She had chronic diarrhea until she started solids, now it is constipation. There is no inbetween either...she is either really constipated or her stools go very loose. Never normal.

This isn't juice, but have you tried mixing flaxseed into pancakes or another MSPI food? Flaxseed always makes H poop when she is constipated.

@Mae: c was super constipated once, and our ped gave us the OK for a dark brown sugar water. I forget the mixture, but do recall that the recipe they gave me was the exact recipe I googled -- it might have been 2tbsp of dark brown sugar to 1c water or something.

C only got a few sips in because she hates bottles, but ohhhh boy did it get things moving.

We called it a two person poop & needed three diapers.

Good luck!

We got as far as buying the prune Apple juice bottles when LOs constipation cleared up.

Does she eat yogurt? I used to mix prune puree into her plain yogurt and she loved it. But possibly she still doesn't want to be fed that either.

@Mae: i have never tried the white grape hopefully that will work! if not definitely try the prune juice or concentrate. it stinks when they are constipated! our ped did recommend a tsp of Karo syrup for a natural method that works quickly too.

What about actual prunes? Or they make those "plum aamazings" or something like that. It's basically just diced up prunes that you can sprinkle on cereal and stuff. They might be the perfect finger food for her?
(No experience, just something I thought of when you mentioned she hates purees now).

We did half and half Apple juice and it would be effective. I think prune juice has a stronger taste than just prunes.

I wouldn't worry too much about how much to dilute it. I mean, yeah you don't want to let a baby live off of juice. But sometimes I think the Internet makes juice out to be the equivalent of putting straight dr. Pepper in a baby bottle. Yes, it's a lot of sugar with no fiber, but if it makes them poop then that is a nutritional benefit!

We did diluted pear juice and it didn't work at all. That's when we went to prune purée. Will she drink prune juice? I know that works. I have heard success with little but of kero syrup as well.

@MrsF: interesting thought to add it to formula... she takes 4 bottles/day so it would be pretty easy to add an ounce of prune juice to each bottle and see how that works. I do worry about whether we can even get her to drink that much from her straw cup. I guess I'm hoping since grape juice tastes better than plain water maybe she will? we'll find out!

At that age we used to add an ounce or two of prune juice to her formula bottles if she hadn't pooped. I liked doing it that way because I could pretty much guarantee that she would take it since she wasn't reliable with water yet. Every baby is so different so you sort of have to experiment to figure out how much / how often (though 8 ounces sounds like a lot to me too). If she was really struggling and we could tell she was trying to pass something we would give her a glycerine suppository. It was no fun but at least it was over quickly and she was so much more comfortable in the end. We tried probiotics but I never really saw much of a difference there.

Gerber makes a prune/Apple juice combo in little 4oz bottles. LO likes it. I think I was giving maybe 2oz per day, diluted. There is also a prune juice concentrate with prebiotics that worked well for us when constipation was at its worst. You can find it at cvs, walgreens etc.

Can I just say how much I hate asking the internet about baby poop?

Anyways. We've been struggling with constipation with my LO since she started eating more solids around 9 months. We finally figured out that giving her 3/4 container of prune puree every morning was keeping things moving for her-- yay!

Except now she HATES purees and wants nothing to do with them. (either by us spoon feeding her or us loading the spoon and handing it to her, or doing pouches-- wants nothing to do with any of them).

So I asked our ped for some recommendations for what else we can do since she won't take the puree anymore and they said give her pears or peaches (except she already eats a bit of pears and clearly they aren't doing enough) or we can give her white grape juice or pear juice. They said how we give it to her and how much we give to her is just trial/error and they had no specific recommendation beyond not to give her more than 8oz/day (which seems like a TON).

So I guess that was sort of helpful... but I'm wondering if others have used white grape or pear juice to help their littles with constipation and what amounts/dilution worked for you? At least to give us some idea of where to start the process.

Currently LO has only every had breastmilk/formula and water. We offer her a straw cup of water throughout the day and she sips it often but doesn't actually drink much (maybe an oz/day if that).
