Yes, cleaning the Breville is not that bad if you do RIGHT AFTER. The pulp can get thrown out whenever, but that mesh filter gets annoying to scrub out if it starts to dry out with the pulp on it. That said, throw out the stupid brush they include and get a palm brush that looks like this:

http://www.amazon.com/OXO-Good-Grips-Ceramic-Brush/dp/B00L9X55VG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1430518428&sr=8-1&keywords=palm+brush

It cleans out the filter in seconds. Also YES to the Suja green juice at Costco - I drank that all the time postpartum because I didn't want to deal with running the juicer and cleaning it with a colicky baby.

We also have a Breville juicer and we love it. The cleanup isn't bad as long you rinse/soak all the parts right after use. The "waste" we put into our compost, so we don't really feel bad about the parts of the veggies/fruit it doesn't use. Honestly, the fresher the juice the better., and the bottled juices you can buy are not near as beneficial as fresh juice. I can't say how much the cost of average juice costs for us if you include the price of the juicer, but the taste and health benefits vs the bottled juices are worth the investment to me. (We also don't really have a juice bar close by, so there's that.)

DH got an Omega and that way I was able to have fresh juice throughout pregnacny! The clean up is annoying, DH prefers juice over like a smoothie texture though so he's willing to put in the work..

@Mrs. Bee: @TheSwissWifeStyle: Thanks for your input. I do wish we liked smoothes, but no one in this house seems too fond of them. But juices are a big hit (even though I feel bad about not getting the good fiber).

@Corduroy: Thanks for the info! I don't know whether the juices I've been buying are unpasturized, probably? But they come from the juice bar fresh, so hopefully I'm good!

@gingerbebe: @MrsYellowJacket: @looch: Ooh! Thanks for the links and recommendations! I think I looked at the first one because I have bought and fond of the Breville line of products.

@TheSwissWifeStyle: Oh, I agree! And I am sure it will be a temporary thing with these pregnancy cravings, I'm just considering juicing at home to save some money with how much I want to drink! :P

@gingerbebe: K loves the Naked Green Machine, but a lot of those juices/smoothies in the store have bananas, which is a huge deterrent for me. Can't stand the taste! :P I agree, the fresh stuff tastes SO much better!

Oh yeah, I also already have a high powered blender (Vitamix), so its not so much picking one or the other for me. Its possible your local thrift shop has a juicer you can try for a few bucks, but honestly the cheaper juicers waste a lot of juice because they don't have enough centripetal force to fling the juice out. That's why I went with a Breville and I know people who enjoy their Jack Lalane, but others have been less impressed with other brands that were cheaper.

When I traveled while pregnant, I drank a lot of Naked Juice and Bolthouse green juices - whatever one had the kale or green veggies in it. They were fine for $2.50 a bottle on the go, but it definitely didn't TASTE as good as the fresh stuff to me. If you have an Asian market or farmstand nearby you can buy a ton of veggies for very cheap. Also your combinations need not be expensive and complicated. When I was a poor law student, I used to buy those big bags of romaine hearts and 10lb bags of organic carrots at Costco and then buy a bunch of limes and a 3lb bag of smaller apples at the grocery store (they fit whole in the chute). That was my basic daily juice and I could get a week's worth of juice for under $15.

I have a Jack Lalane one, it works reasonably well, I like to use it for fresh orange juice mostly.

My 2 cents...We had a juicer for a while, but gave it to MIL b/c we totally stopped using it after the novelty wore off. It was a PITA to clean, took up way too much space and required a lot of fruits and veggies to make a glass of juice.

We got a high powered blender and use it so much more.

We've had this one for almost six years and use it all the time. Idk the average cost for a cup since we always switch it up. To me, healthy and fresh is worth is!

I have this one. Not expensive and works great - have had it for 6 years now! I can make a ton of juice with one romaine heart, one Persian cuke, 1-2 carrots, 1-2 stalls of celery, 1 peeled lime, and 1 apple. Sometimes I throw in a little kale (the Dino/lacinato kale makes more juice) or a little knob of ginger or a handful of parsley. I also love to juice the core of a pineapple.

Straight green juices are very pricey. I could easily see it taking 12 bunches of kale to fill a glass. Not that you would. The cost of the juice would depend on all the other things that fill it. Personally, I have a hard time dumping out the waste bin after juicing and throwing all the expensive waste away. Juice shops and juice manufacturers can get much better yields by using juicers specific to each type of produce.

On a safety note, bottled unpasteurized juices are a pretty scary thing. Unlike most 'pregnancy no-no's,' they actually require an FDA warning statement - which not all of them are putting on their label. "WARNING: This product has not been pasteurized and therefore may contain harmful bacteria that can cause serious illness in children, the elderly, and persons with weakened immune systems." You don't see that regulation on deli meat or froyo.

HPP or "cold-pressurized" juices as the fancy brands like to call it are a good alternative to un-pasteurized pre-bottled juices. Alternatively, drinking freshly squeezed juice within a few hours of juicing would limit your risk to a more reasonable level.

i was thinking about buying a juicer, but just stuck to making my smoothies much thinner by adding more liquid in my vitamix. It's not the same -- I love green juice too. But I freeze all the ingredients in a ziploc bag per serving so I just have to add almond milk. It's very cold and refreshing!

I posted about a juicer a while ago and everyone advised me not to get one, that I wouldn't use it and that it was a pain to clean. When I see how much veggies go into a green juice, I understand why they're so pricey!

One pregnancy craving I've been having: juices! You know, greens, fruit, cold-pressed, fancy-schmancy stuff. Ugh! I hate paying so much ($8/bottle at WF) and I hate how much you have to buy just to make a little bit of juice at home. Plus, the juicers all seem really expensive? I've only bought ingredients and had my friend make jars of juice for me before.

Any affordable juicer recommendations? And how much would you say it costs to make a glass/bottle of juice at home? I mean, if it's almost the same cost, I might as well save the space and energy. TIA!
