Junk food hasn't killed me yet, so I'm not about to stop my kids from eating it. I will be careful about quantities, but I won't be banning it. If I did that, I'd have to drastically alter what I feed myself and DH.

@hilsy85: We are thinking of doing the same thing. "healthy junk food"... DH and I aren't huge on soft-drinks and try to keep granola bars and pretzels and unsalted popcorn as our "snacks." We will definitely be lenient on special occasions, but as an every day type snack - I think we'll try pushing the fruit/veggies thing as best we can... "everything in moderation" is a good rule for all things food in our household.

I agree with plenty of the others that moderation is best. It's just not practical to say "never eat sweets," and I don't mind if she has some potato chips and candy at a birthday party - that's definitely a good time to have them! Get the sugar rush out while she's playing with her friends, then come home and sleep ;)

I like sweets and I like to bake sweets so I'm guessing my daughter will eat sweets. I think moderation is good. And we don't keep super processed food like twinkies around. I never ate potato chips growing up so they're never in the house. If she goes over to someone else's house I'm not going to make her think she can't have some, they just won't be in our house. Baked treats will be in our house though because I love them.

I think junk food is fine in moderation. I definitely don't let her eat it all the time but if she wants pizza cake and soda on her birthday, why not? She only has one birthday every year. We don't keep any soda or much junk food in the house though.

LO won't be eating a lot of junk food - it's not something we eat a lot of or keep around our house, so certainly the availability to those types of foods will be limited, especially before they are school age.

I don't plan to rely on "organic" or "all natural" as a failsafe - there are plenty of very high fat organic cookies, and everything nowadays is "all natural" (including some frozen, previously fried, dinosaur shaped chicken nuggets I see in the freezer section the other day. Yeah, dino shaped chicken is "natural"!).

I think instead of really restricting "junk food", our emphasis will be on a healthier diet overall. Like, for instance, we eat a lot of tacos but they are not the Americanized kind with ground beef and fried tortillas (especially flour which are pretty high fat/carb). Steamed, not fried, corn tortillas, lots of fish and lean meat like chicken, spinach, avocados and homemade salsas.

Making chicken fingers/nuggets from skinless chicken and panko bread crumbs and oven baking them instead of using frozen or fried and breaded. Choices like these, and lots of veggies and fish done in interesting ways.

Fast food will definitely be a rare treat.

He eats what we eat. If I'm having cake at a party so can he. We don't keep things like chips or soda in our house, so he doesn't have it very often. He hates soda anyways and will actually spit it out if he takes a sip without realizing it.

If LO eats well most of the time then there is room for the occasional junk food. Fast food will probably be completely absent as DH and I never eat it but chips and sweets every so often aren't a problem.

Hrmm, I like to think that we are relatively healthy (well, not on the organic front), but we cook 80% of the time so I know what goes into our food. But, I have a big sweet tooth and have to have some form of sweets daily so I know I won't be able to hide that from my future kids. And the husband can't resist some occasional chips.

When I was younger, I totally remember sneaking junk food, so I definitely don't want that to happen! I like the whole "everything in moderation" philosophy.

We eat pretty darn healthy most of the time, so our kids will to. That said, I don't want to create any "forbidden foods" that will give our kids issues. I think we'll teach them that certain foods are to be eaten sparingly and that other foods are what we eat most of the time. We will avoid very processed foods.

My LOs are going to eat healthy--organic, free range, etc. However, husband and I like to eat frozen yogurt, ice cream and "junk food" once in a while so we'll let our LOs eat when we do.

I think that we'll be in between with plenty of healthy food and a few sweets. My 4 year old nephews love cake! They seriously go nuts for it. It's a special occasion thing for them. They also have a palate of a college student with chicken fingers, mac and cheese, etc. Veggies are a fight with them. I'm hoping that our kids will be veggie fans.

I'd rather buy "healthy" junk food, like pita chips instead of potato chips, and whole grain crackers instead of ritz crackers. We never keep typical junk food in our house, and I don't think that'll change when we have kids. However, I also think that it's not good to NEVER let them have soda/chips/candy, etc because then it becomes like the forbidden fruit and they just want it more. Everything in moderation, like @eeh says.

My DD's are older (4 and 8) and we are not near as strict as we thought we would be. I mean, they are limited with the amount of sugar they are allowed to have, but I don't want them to think it's all bad. I think the teaching of moderation is a very important lesson.
I think I expected to be a lot stricter than I am and maybe it's now that I've been a mommy for a while I just don't stress about some things as much. Idk.

We won't let our kids pig out whenever they want but we want them to learn all things are okay in moderation. We don't want to have the kids that go to a birthday party and see sweets for the first time and be the annoying kid on a first time sugar high. We also don't want them to start sneaking things or feel like it's something they have to hide. We want to stress healthy eating which includes having the occasional treat. We also don't want to turn into food snobs and flip out anytime grandma gives the kid a cookie.

Will you let your LO eat junk food like chips, candy, ice cream, cake, etc? A lot of my friends are very strict and don't let their kids eat any junk...even on special occasions like at birthday parties. My DH & I agreed that we will probably be more lenient and allow our LO to splurge on special occasions...

What are your thoughts?
