This happened to me, and I deferred mine. There is just too much up in the air when you are at jury duty to be able to pump regularly. I think that's why they offer the option of deferral.

I'm not really surprised they can't accommodate BFing/pumping women-- if it was, say, the lawyer, they could just arrange breaks around her schedule, but with so many jurors, who could have different schedules, I think it would be impossible to schedule around everyone's pumping schedule. And I think allowing it as an excuse is a fair accommodation.

I'd definitely postpone again. Then if they give you any trouble, bring your pump and hands free pumping bra in with you and set it up during jury selection. I think they'd let you go at that point :)

Well, this explains it for Illinois:

http://www.llli.org/law/lawjury.html

By law, they have to excuse a nursing/pumping mom. That's how they get around it in my state. So, sometime before my LO's first birthday I'll probably have a jury duty day. For now, I'm excused by law.

This is a neat article I found on Kellymom about breastfeeding and jury duty. I guess some courts are better than others:

@MerryC: yeah, that's probably what they would do. I'm not going to chance it. I'll email the court on Monday and ask for another delay. At least it takes some pressure off of whether I'll continue pumping or not at the 6 month mark.

@cascademom: That sucks that they only defer for such a short period of time! But they have to either let you postpone or accommodate you.

If you go, they have to give you lunch breaks, bathroom breaks, etc. But if it's an old courthouse type building, they probably just don't have a separate room dedicated for that purpose? It might be logistically awful, but I guess if you HAD to, could you pump in the bathroom, just whenever you're allowed a break?

I would opt out because if they can't accommodate you, then you shouldn't have to not pump whether you were or were not planning on stopping around then. Don't let jury duty be your determining factor.

Even if you decide to stop at 6 months, there is a transition period to stop producing milk. You wouldn't want to sit there all day engorged.

I would ask for another deferment.

I guess they can't stop a trial if a mom needs to go pump?

@2PeasinaPod: I'm leaning towards that. It puts less pressure on a decision that I'm already see sawing about since it's hard enough to decide to continue pumping or not.

I would also bow out. Even if you decide not to continue pumping, it's another added stress to think about and may influence your decision.

So disappointing that they can't accommodate.

@lemondrop: Here in Chicago, they only give 6 weeks to 2 months deferral. I'm still puzzled as to why they don't accommodate pumping mothers. Chicago's a fairly progressive city, so not having a way to accommodate is crazy. I wonder if some moms pump in the bathroom there or pump in the car.

Wow, that's terrible that there are no accommodations for nursing mothers! I'd decline jury duty citing breastfeeding your child as the reason. If you're still pumping during the day, you're going to be awfully uncomfortable if you don't have access to a pumping room at your normal schedule.

Yeah, I'd definitely bow out, it's pretty ridiculous that there is not an accommodation for this already.

Before my maternity leave ended, I received my first ever jury duty notice. Normally, I'd be really excited about finally doing jury duty, but I'm breastfeeding and back at work when I was supposed to appear. I emailed the clerk and asked if they had accommodations for pumping/nursing mothers. Surprisingly, they don't. I was able to get out of it.

Yesterday, I got my notice again to appear. I'm still breastfeeding/pumping at work. I know that they don't have the means to support a pumping mom there. I'm scheduled to appear two days before my LO turns 6 months old, my original end date for breastfeeding. I'm still not sure if I'm going to keep pumping and breastfeeding after that. We've told our daycare that we'll consider other options after March 1st when he has his 6 month appointment.

I'm not sure what to do. Should I get milkies and try to collect milk for the day, though I've heard that you can be there until 4pm? Should I bow out again and wait awhile longer until April? Also, anyone know why some courts can't accommodate nursing/pumping moms? This bothers me for some reason as someone who works right near the downtown courts and works for a company that's supportive of pumping moms. Wouldn't they want you to do your civic duty with two pumping sessions during the wait?
