Since it's all based off of when you get your period (and you know how unpredictable AF is), that is why appointments kinda just happen.

I didn't have beta tests done, so my Dr visits weren't as frequent as others.

Here was my schedule-
When AF showed up, I would call the doc. They might have me come in on day 3 of my cycle to get a baseline. Then schedule another appt on day 10 of my cycle to check out how big my follicles were. Sometimes they would give me two days or sometimes one day or even that afternoon, tell me that my follicles are large and that they need to give me the trigger shot. After the trigger shot is administered, I have 24 hours to do the IUI. So I have to make sure the DH is ready and available to come in for a deposit. Then I come in after and have the IUI done. Then we wait.

The appointments can be very sudden and very frequent. I try to make sure my schedule is fairly open but I do have a fairly flexible job and boss so as long as my work gets done--- it's fine.

Now the above is all based off a normal cycle. If anything abnormal comes up (medication side effects, enlarged follicles, procedure side affects) they might want to see me that day. If they have a 2pm, you'll take it because it might be the only slot available and you'll want to do anything in order to get pregnant.

Oh, if a particular treatment hasn't been working, they'll want me to come in to discuss other options. So that another meeting that pops up. Usually it's a few days before you ovulate so, there is quite an urgency to do it before you miss your chance.

There have been times with my clinic where they've asked me to come in right away and it was completely unpredictable. The second time I was pregnant I knew I'd be there every other morning for betas but there were also times when they'd call in the morning and say I needed a PIO injection right away, or I needed to come and pick up some medication or they wanted to draw some extra blood, and those things couldn't wait for the next day or the evening. At the time I definitely would have just said I was doing fertility treatments.

I remember my friend who had IUI's had to be told with very short notice due to her levels of some sort when she'd go in. Hazy on the details but I think she had an idea it would be say, the next few days, then they said when to come in. Maybe she has more of an idea, but doesn't feel comfortable sharing since it's basically about her cycles, etc? I'm no expert and probably shouldn't even be commenting haha!

@mrsjyw: I've done 2 IUI cycles, and I've never had an appointment scheduled without at least 12 hours notice. Also, my RE only does monitoring from 6-11am so I can go before work. I guess it would depend though on what kind of treatment she's doing and how far away the RE is. I don't want to encourage your DH to be less accommodating, but this whole process so far has been easy for me to schedule around work. I haven't told my boss anything about it. I can't think of an instance where they would call me to come in within an hour or two - usually I get called in the afternoon to schedule the next appointment (for the next morning, or two days out, depending on my follicles, etc)

My appointments were almost always last minute web it and to monitoring my cycle.

Here's an example of my clomid cycle when I got pregnant with Chloe:

- called clinic on day one of full flow of my period to get script for clomid
- took clomid days 3-10
- called clinic on day I got positive OPK
- went in next morning for blood work to verify O & progesterone levels
- had lots of pain, worried about over stim. Went in same day ultrasound. Had follicle scan.
- got pos home preg test on 12DPO
- called REs office at 6:45am (their protocol)
- went in for beta before 8am
- results returned before 10am
- 2nd beta before 8am 48 hrs later
- scheduled 5 week us
- schedule 8 week us

That's just a clomid cycle. My appointments were even more sporadic and last minute when going through testing.

@mrsjyw: Sometimes with IVF, you don't know when they will transfer the embryos until a couple hours beforehand since it depends on how they look that morning. Just a guess though.

@mrsjyw: Obviously I'm just one patient who's been to one clinic, so I don't know the procedures at this employe's clinic, appts w/only 1-2hr notice is odd to me! I always knew by the afternoon before.

i can give you an example of how unpredictable it can be:

when i started my period i had to call and schedule a baseline ultrasound. a lot times they had me come in that day but no later than the next day.

then i would schedule an appointment for around day 12 or so to see how many eggs i had and if they were ready to ovulate.

if they weren't mature, i would have to go back every day until they were mature and i could give myself a trigger to cause ovulation.

then i scheduled an appt 36 hours after the trigger for an iui.

in that example, only one appointment was scheduled a week or more ahead of time...

I did IUI w/injectables twice. Injectables require very frequent monitoring via bloodwork and ultrasounds, every day or every other day starting day 2 or 3, for about 10 days. At my hospital, ultrasound was blocked off for IF patients from 7:30-8:30, so if you live/work close you could still get to work at a decent time. A nurse would call you bw 1-4 to let you know if you needed to come back the following day. IUIs were all scheduled for 11am, but you don't know until day or two before exactly which day. It is very intense and there is pretty much no flexibility.

When I was doing IUIs with my OB-Gyn, they were almost all on the fly. I felt lucky if I had 1 or 2 days notice. When I started with my RE, things were a little more structured. So far with my RE, I have only had 1 appointment where I called and had to go in the same day. The other appointments I have had typically 2 days notice. I try to make my appointments either first thing in the morning or late afternoon, but this isn't always possible. This is part of the reason why this journey is so stressful.

thank you all for the info!

i guess his concern is that the last few have been 1-2 hours notice. he's TOTALLY okay with a day or two, because he can always get back-up resources within that time frame, but he's been caught the last few times going in or going without and having unhappy clients due to the SOOO last minute appts. he totally gets that it's unpredictable and he has to be flexible, but wanted some detailed info just because his employee hasn't provided info besides asking for the time and he doesn't feel right asking details of her infertility treatments since he views them as any other medical need/private info.

I had some appts scheduled a half hour before the appt was to start. It wasn't so much before I started with the RE, but their office seemed to run on last minute appointments. It's so inconvenient for everyone involved, but with the nature of the unpredictableness, it's one of those things.

Absolutely only a day or two and occasionally last minute. I've had both. Certain things have to happen on certain days and you can't do them on a different day. And you are so desperate you don't really negotiate or risk it. You so what they say when they say it.

For example we are driving our sick toddler 4 hours to go the day 3 appointment because we can't leave him at home. He isn't going in we are tag teaming in the car. But we can't change the appointment or anything.

In the middle of a treatment cycle, they nearly all are "on the fly" appointments. I would typically get 1-2 days notice for all of my monitoring, insemination, retrieval, and transfer appointments. These are all determined by your hormone levels and follicle development. The treatment cycle would begin on the second or third day after your period starts, which of course is also uncertain. The unpredictable timing is a big reason why infertility treatments are so stressful. You can kinda guess the general timing, but you will be inevitably off by a couple days since you never know how quickly you will respond to meds.

During a typical IUI or IVF cycle, I would say I had 8 or so "on the fly" appointments. 6 of these would be in the early morning so I could go before work (monitoring is usually done in the early morning at fertility clinics for this reason), but at least 1 or 2 of these require missing a day of work altogether. Some doctors also require 1-3 days of bedrest after procedures. I did six cycles altogether.

From what I understand you have a very small window for IUI and IVF during your cycle. So if, for example, she got bloodwork or ultrasound results back saying that she was near ovulation, I would assume it would be a last minute appointment to have the procedure done. A lot of people have irregular cycles and don't have any way of planning ahead for these types of things. I can't imagine there would be too many of those though...

When you're going through treatments/interventions to aid in your journey to pregnancy, are there any appts that can be a "on the fly" or "come in when we call you" type situations re: IVF, IUI, etc.?

DH has an employee going through some infertility treatments, and while he wants to be sensitive/cognizant of all the medical procedures/sick time he will need; he is trying to stay ahead as far as not scheduling her, etc. around her medical appts; but she's had quite a few that have been last minute, a couple hours before, etc.

I have no idea how appts are in this area and was wondering if you could provide some educated feedback that I can tell DH.
