I think you took the appropriate steps to ensure the car seat you bought is safe. Not all parents are educated enough to know to go to their local fire department to get it inspected. I know I wasn't at first and I didn't know that they gave away confirmed safe car seats to low income families. I definitely researched our choice, and made sure we covered ourselves to ensure that it was a safe situation. Yet another way to make buyers trust sellers, right? And I'm sure majority of parents who sell their used car seats are responsible enough not to list it if it has been in an accident. I know some car seat brands will replace your car seat if it has been in an accident. Sounds silly but I didn't even consider a used seat from close friends mainly because it's super cold here in the winters and very hot in the summer. I'd rather spend the $150 (for a cheaper 2nd seat) and save somewhere else.
