@MzBlueBee: I would absolutely not recommend tracking or trying to plan getting pregnant. I am also a pretty Type A planner and when I didn't get pregnant quickly (i was charting and temping) I lost my mind. I got ferility testing and even prematurely had an IUI. I ended up getting pregnant 100% naturally. I wish I had never tried so hard, I think it really screwed me! But I know "trying to not try" is easier said than done!

I also read "Taking Charge of Your Fertility". I was charting in a half assed manner.

I know my mom really struggled to have us. Before me (her first) she had several miscarriages, one in the second trimester. The one thing DH and I discussed before TTC was how far we were willing to go. I didn't think I could handle that, and I definitely did not want to do any fertility treatments. We felt at the time that we would be good either way. It ended up not being an issue for us, but we discussed what we were willing to do and not do. I think that was important for us.

Also, when I got a positive pregnancy test, I immediately felt like I was in over my head and freaked out. I think my exact words, as I told my husband, were "what have we done!?!" DH wasn't exactly sure what to do. So. Maybe be prepared for that.

If you're the type to get obsessive I would say skip the OPKs, temping, etc for now. I was really intense about everything right off the bat. We got pregnant on the first try, had a miscarriage, and then got pregnant on the first try again with our daughter. With my son, we got pregnant when I should have been two days past ovulation and we weren't trying. It made me realize I'm fortunate enough to be super fertile and I could have saved myself a ton of stress if I had just had fun with it. All I needed was a general knowledge of my cycle timing.

I also never used opks or temped or any of that because I'm waaay too much of a control freak and knew I'd drive myself crazy. FF or Ovia (used for different pregnancies) was close enough to help me estimate when I might be ovulating, and we just had lots of sex around that time (though 2/3 times that I got pregnant, I actually thought I'd missed my "fertile window," so it's def not exact!). TTC can be such a stressful experience, for me at least--I haaate uncertainty--so I definitely would have gone down a rabbit hole of obsessing even more than I already was if I was more actively charting!

I would just say, give it some time. It can take a while! If you go into it thinking it takes 6 months/ a year, then there's less chance you'll obsess. Maybe. :silly: and, just have sex often. And have fun with it!

I like the Ovia app- just for tracking cycles in case you need it down the road. I vote sex every other day- that's how we got pregnant after 2 months. No OPKs or intense tracking (temping) is needed right away IMO. Just have sex and enjoy it and give yourself a couple months.

Here's my advice-- have sex. A lot. Don't worry about anything else unless you are trying for 6 months or have very irregular cycles.

I have gotten pregnant 3 times. The book taking charge of your fertility really helped, but I found formally charting and doing opks wasn't needed. Just realizing mucus was all I needed

I'm crazy too and found OPKs more helpful especially if your cycle is regular. Temping just had too much room for error/interpretation! For my first, the first cycle I used OPKs and we did it the day I ovulated (I think), we got pregnant.

In terms of good resources on TTC, I really liked Taking Charge of Your Fertility and the Impatient Women's Guide to Getting Pregnant.

In terms of not stressing too much, this isn't very helpful but I think you mostly have to find what works best for you. As much as there are things that can be lousy about TTC, I think it's also a good opportunity to learn what sort of self care works for you. For me personally, temping and OPKs reduce my stress level because I like knowing what's going on, but that is not the case for everyone. When I got stressed out this evening after making the (possible) mistake of googling about infertility, I went for a run, put my let it go essential oil in a diffuser, and turned on my sunlight lamp, and I feel a lot better. POAS threads are a good place to see different people's approaches to TTC stress management.

Exciting! It can definitely be a bit of a roller coaster and it's darn near impossible to tell you what to expect. I told myself I'd give us 3 months without opks or temping to see what happened and I didn't make it because it was too nerve wracking. That being said, we conceived the fifth month with my daughter, the first try wherever we tried for a second but then miscarried and then 4 months with my current pregnancy. Most people conceive within 6 months if they have decently timed intercourse.

One tip is be careful if you use lube since most aren't sperm friendly.

DH and I have been together for 10+ years, we've been married just shy of 3 years. We just bought a house and have decided it's time to TTC.

I know everyone's journey is different, I guess I'm just looking for some tips and advice to keep my control freak self calm. I have FF, but I haven't been using OPKs or Temping and I hadn't planned on it - my cycles are regular (28-30 days) - is this something that I should really consider right away? I can get very obsessive and control freak and I don't want to be that way about this.
