@bluestriped bee: whoa! That is quite a hefty bill! I am actually in sticker shock over the exorbitant amount they're charging for all of that. I do hope you get your BFP soon now that you have a diagnosis.

So I just found this bill today. Yeah, $2,559. This is from my new clinic. They ran blood work, too.

On the bright side, I got a diagnosis! :/

@FaithFertility: OMG. You went to Quest and not your RE and it was still that much! Wow! Yeah, insurance coverage was tiny at $98. Did you call your insurance to ask why it wasn't covered?

So my bill for the $630 was blood work at my old RE. I recently got a full work up at my new RE about 2 weeks ago (before I got the $630 bill). I'm terrified what the bill is going to come to. The one positive thing about this one is that my new RE, at least, gave me an diagnosis. Just hoping I can write off our medical expenses this year, if I hit the 10% of my income mark. It was going to be easy with IVF, but now that we might try a few more IUIs with the new meds, I'm not sure.

Unfortunately, that sounds about right. I was shocked that blood work was one of the most expensive tests I had to do prior to starting IVF. I got a $3000 bill for a full preconception work up that included CF testing since DH is a carrier. We had to resubmit extra paperwork to insurance, but they did cover it. I've heard of some people going through their GP or regular OB for blood work just so that insurance doesn't categorize it as infertility. Maybe you could try that next time if you have to do more lab work.

My RE consultation included blood work for genetic testing. I think that was all that was include. Insurance claim was just submitted for $1,700 - that is insane!! I've met my deductible already with all the testing going on but still have a coinsurance amount now. :(

Ugh. Yeah, I don't think that's too unusual for all that. :/ I think all the pre-screening for IVF runs in the $500-$2000 range. :/ Too bad they couldn't have coded it differently for crying out loud!

@bluestriped bee: sorry that had to happen. I'm guessing it's the thalassemia they are looking for. I had that testing done when I was in college because I was always fatigued & my periods were extremely random. Maybe you can talk to your doctor or OB/Gyn about ordering the thalassemia testing as that would be something they can order for diagnostic purposes of your general health & preventative/early intervention for pregnancy. :goodluck:

Ugh. Blood work costs blow my mind! I've had two sets done in the past two wks (they totaled almost $5,000!!!), I looked at my ins claims yesterday, mr. Bird nearly shit a brick when I told him how much they were, he thought that was OOP, but the ins covered all of it (thank god because we wouldn't be at to afford it otherwise!). I'm sorry they were more than you expected!

@bluestriped bee: I agree with what gingerbee said - if you need any additional bloodwork see if you can do it through your OB. I did that and it was all covered even though I don't have IF coverage. Things like HIV and an STD panel should be covered.

@bluestriped bee: They do the HIV/STD tests also for your first pregnancy appointment, so you would think that somehow it could be negotiated under prenatal care. Yeah you aren't pregnant yet, but working towards that, so it's not fair they wouldn't cover that for you. :( Or at least preventative healthcare? I have a $400 bill for an ultrasound and bloodwork sitting on my desk and another $200+ one from another ultrasound. I know you said you weren't complaining about healthcare, but I think it sucks and I really do think it should cover things better like your IVF!

Ugh I'm sorry. I paid 700-800$ for a repeat loss panel with my old insurance. That was all bloodwork but it did have a genetic test which costs more. Unfortunately while it ruled a few things out it told us nothing of use.

We're about to lose if coverage and I'm praying my new re won't make me redo all the testing I had done in October. I can't imagine what that would cost out of pocket and not even to treatments yet.

I don't know if this helps this time around, but you can try to see if your regular OB/GYN might get into an agreement with your RE to order some tests on their behalf so that it can be billed through insurance. A lot of those tests are pretty standard from a regular OB/GYN's office and insurance doesn't question it. If they see its from an RE's office, they will just reject it. Then they release the results to the RE. In my town, the RE places seem to do this fairly often.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I'm not at the office anymore so I shouldn't be screened again. Although, I just started seeing a new RE and blood was taken 2 weeks ago. It wasn't a full panel so let's hope I don't have to pay that much again.

I was aware of the charges (they gave me a price list), but, man, this bill completely threw me for loop.
