@PastaAndPotato: My DH had low volume and paired with a LEEP procedure I'd had done previously my RE recommended IUI. We got pregnant on the first try after 9 failed cycles of trying, charting, OPKs, etc. Going to see an RE made me feel so much better because it felt like I was finally moving toward a solution versus continuing to fail. FYI IUIs are much cheaper than IVF, so if these aren't covered by your insurance and your RE gives you an option, IUI is certainly the cheaper one.

thank you all so much for your support and sharing some of your experiences! im an over-planner to a fault, and i can't tell you how comforting it is hearing your experiences and to have in my head just an outline of what to expect

i really am so glad to know whats going on, and to know that now our feet are on the right path to getting a BFP - its easier to deal with then the uncertainty that we had before

@spaniellove: im in s. jersey, down at the shore (southern cape may county). our urologist used to work at penn, and he said that he normally refers fertility cases there. i would love to hear any other recommendations you have for other local clinics (the hour+ drive back and forth is a little nerve wracking w/penn)

i really can't thank you all enough - the hubs isn't ready to talk about it with our families/friends yet, and its amazing to be able to talk to you guys about it, and to have a group of women who can share their experiences with the same thing

heading over to check out the infertility and fertility treatment threads now!

I agree with Mrs. Green Grass in that IVF is very successful for male-factor infertility issues.

I'm sorry you are going through this. I went through two years of infertility struggles and surgeries before finally having to do IVF last January. (I have a 3 mo. old son because of it) If you decide to do IVF, let me know if you have any questions! Also, I also encourage you to change RE's if you aren't happy with U Penn. It's imperative that you have one you love. I loved our RE!

I'm not pregnant yet, and we're just at the 1-year mark, so maybe I'll feel different as more time goes on, but I know for me, after we met with the RE a few months ago I felt incredibly RELIEVED to have a real plan, and to have a doctor who was willing to be very thorough in figuring out issues on both sides and knowing what action to take to remedy them.

So while every doctor/specialist is different, I would say expect to feel a renewal of hope in regards to your TTC journey. It's still stressful for sure, but it's so nice to know that someone's on your side and helping you work through it all!

(And on the more literal front, expect more testing for both of you, namely bloodwork for both, an hsg for you, and maybe another SA for him, and a follow-up meeting to discuss the results and next steps).

Definitely look around for clinics. And if you don't like the RE after a visit, don't be afraid to switch. If you just want general info, I'd read all the infertility posts on here or there is a good thread on WB. The exciting thing is that now that you know what's going on, you know you'll be making real progress in the following cycles rather than having no idea why it's not working. I personally feel that IVF is especially successful with male factor infertility (not based on any medical findings - just by knowing people who have gone through it).

Good luck!

@PastaAndPotato: This is probably a lot to take in right now! We have been working with an RE after a couple bad SAs from a urologist too. In our case it was very low motility. I see you live in SJ - is there a particular reason your dr referred you to Penn, or is that just where he refers patients? (I noticed they each have a clinic they like to refer people) We also live in SJ and I can talk to you about the other local clinics if you're interested.

If you haven't already had tests done on yourself, the RE will probably want to spend a month or two doing tests on you, and possibly another SA. Don't be afraid to speak up for what you want and ask your doctor/nurse anything you want to know. You learn quickly at these practices that it's every patient for herself! And we're all here for you - the infertility support thread is great!

Best of luck in these next steps! My husband and I are also at the year and a half mark. We have been with our RE since September, and just had our first IUI last week. I think the best advice I can give you is to take care of yourself and write down any and all questions. There's several tests that usually come before an IUI or IVF process, but maybe since you already have your SA results, you can dive right in. Have you had any bloodwork tests? It can be overwhelming, that first appointment. But if you have your questions, and your current test results, everything should go smoothly.

The taking care of yourself part is super important too. It's a hard process, getting into fertility treatments, but getting answers and working towards a healthy pregnancy is exciting. Mentally, I needed something to help me through it and yoga has been great. Also, the infertility support thread here on HelloBee.

Hugs to you! And here's hoping that you get your BFP really soon!

my husband and i had been trying to conceive for just shy of a year and a half, and he just had a SA done. the results came back that he has a low concentration and low motile concentration. his dr. said that we would likely have to go the route of IUI or IVF and referred us to the u penn fertility center, and i'm trying to schedule an appointment with them now.

this will be our first experience with a fertility specialist, and i honestly have no idea what to expect, and still a little shocked that we're going to be heading down this path. any advice, words of wisdom, or helpful hints would be greatly appreciated.

thank you, ladies!
