Yeah, I don't think our parents actually remember anything. Apparently, all of us slept like angels even though the notes in our baby books say differently. They say we were always good - even though I remember being yelled at and spanked. Ask for advice on a parenting issue and they can't remember what they did with us. I don't trust 'em one bit.

The nerve of some people! N is 2 and loves us to read to him. Or will sit down and look through the books himself but no where near reading. I would just do your best to let it roll off... FIL is likely remembering wrong.

My daughter is 2 and she knows her alphabet by sight and their sounds. SO if that's considered "reading" then she can read! LOL

Buuuuuut reading in the true sense of the word? That's a whole nother story!

Wait, what do you mean reading???

My LO is 2.5 years old and can recognize numbers and a few alphabets. But that was it. Reading meaning literally reading words?

ETA: Thinking about it, LO would be able to magically recite story books that he likes and that I read to him multiple times. So he would insist he "read" it out loud and he would recite while flipping the book. That's not "reading" though but maybe your FIL thought your husband was reading because he did that? LOL

My mom swears I was reading by age 3, but I think I've come to realize from being around small children that it's more I memorized the words and repeated the story back to her (my nephew did this at age 3 too). That's a whole different ball game than actually recognizing and sounding out words! I think 5 is very appropriate.

So my mom says I was reading at 3 and I believe her. She used my aunt's preschool/kindergarten homeschool curriculum because I really wanted to learn to read and taught me phonics. I remember some of the flashcards a little bit.

But I was a kind of intense kid so I don't think that is typical, and 3 is very different from 2 anyway. I don't expect my LO to start reading until she is 5 and if anyone said anything to me about it, I'd be taken aback for sure!

What?! I consider my daughter to be extremely literate compared with other kids her age. She's 2.5, knows most of her (uppercase) letters, can spell the names of some of the kids in her class (b/c they sing a song spelling all of their names regularly at daycare), and has memorized some parts of some of the books that we read. She most certainly can not read, and I will be astounded if she really learns how to read before she turns 5. My little sister was an extremely early reader, and she learned to truly read sometime between 3.5 and 4 years old.

Some kids do know letters by 18 months and are reading a bit at 2. Is it common? No. But when it does happen, it's got nothing to do with parents teaching, and everything to do with the child himself. Ever try to sit a 2 year old down and force him to learn to read? Doesn't work. Your family member is most likely remembering wrong. I get taking it personally, but try to remember that playing is your LO's most important work right now. We all (most) learn to read eventually anyway, so maybe next time just ask, "why the rush?"

Both my mother and my MIL claim that my husband and I started reading at age 2. Now that my son is almost 5 and watching him learn how to sound out letters and words at this age, almost 3 years after our parents claim we learned to read... I've come to the definite conclusion (I'm seriously 99.9% positive this is correct) that they let us watch so much Sesame Street that we learned what certain words looked like, and then would say them when we saw them appear on the screen. Very "your baby can read" -esque.

My son at almost 5 is just starting to sound out words. Watching him say "bim?" (when the word is "bam!") makes my heart explode with pride. My husband is the same way and is not concerned at all with his rate of development, and he's an english major from a fancy top university. So please don't worry, take your time... they grow up way too fast anyway. :)
