@Lozza - Just in response to your comment, I just don't understand how that logically works since they aren't actually using the food that they eat. Seriously whole peas are coming out in the poop. So I am not sure what calories or other things he is getting from that. They don't have all of the enzymes to break down the foods they are eating. Proteins especially are hard on their little systems. The iron thing I may be able to understand but why worry about iron if you don't know that your child is deficient.

My DS has MSPI that I diagnosed by an elimination diet. I know he gets protein because that is what hurts him and he can't break it down. I am overly protective of food and what he and I eat because I spent 3 months trying to convince my doctor that there was something wrong with him. He screamed constantly (12 hours a day). As long as he is gaining weight and happy he can eat only breastmilk. Food is for fun.

@Mrsbells: He is 7.5 months old. Mixing some breastmilk in his food is actually a great idea, thanks.

@Pelikila: I have tried different times a day, but it didn't seem to make a difference.

@Chopsuey119: Ah sounds like our LOs are a bit alike.

@Looch: I do the top off after, too, which makes him very happy.

Thank you all for the responses, now I feel better that I'm probably not doing anything wrong and his attitude toward solids is fairly common.

@brownie You know, I'd heard that (and read stuff about it on kellymom.com, for one) so we were pretty blase about introducing solids, and then we got a real talking-to from our pediatrician, who said that DS should be having 3 meals a day at 7 months old, and should be eating fruits and veggies and proteins (meat, tofu, egg yolk) and all kinds of stuff. They said he needed the calories and the iron and the protein.

@boogs DS wasn't really into it for a while either, and I actually think one thing that helped us was continuing to try a lot of different flavors and textures till we found a couple he liked. He wanted nothing to do with rice cereal or oatmeal or avocado or peas or plums or carrots, but if you'd break off a little of your banana and squish it with your fingers and give it to him, he was in heaven. And then he decided sweet potato was great, and for a while all he really wanted to eat was those two things. Around 7 months he got better about eating more things (baby yogurt = another big hit!), and now at 7.5 months we can get him to eat a bunch of different things, and he gets solids 3x/day and will eat probably an average of 1 cup of solids at each meal.

For the first year formula and/or breastmilk is all the child needs. So don't worry about pushing solids. As for not liking them, I would recommend trying the let them play in it a bit. Sometimes that can help with the transition. We started with baby led weaning because of the reflux issues we have faced. We wanted food to have a positive connotation and not a pain one.

There are these dehydrated solids by nurturMe that you can add to a bottle that may also help with the transition because they can be as thin or thick as you wish. I like them when we are traveling.

My son loves to eat, he didn't love rice cereal or carrots, so i didn't offer those foods. I gave him oatmeal, which he eats every day for breakfast. As for the other foods, what we did was give him the food first, then the bottle. This was to encourage him to eat his solid food first, then he'd top off with the bottle.

@Boogs: How old is your baby? Maybe he just isnt ready for solids yet? I know some people who mix a little milk into their baby purees to that it has a familiar taste to the baby

My LO doesn't like solids all that much either. I've tried everything. Sometimes she eats like a champ, other times she'll take one bite and she'll be done.
LO's almost 8 months old.
She nurses well and is thriving so I'm not too concerned.

In the beginning my understanding is that solids are more for practice than nutritional content. Getting the tongue thrust to not be an instant reaction and moving the food from the front of the mouth to the back takes practice and that is what purees and baby cereals are for. When we started solids 5 months ago we would get maybe 6 spoonfuls (baby spoons) into him. Over time continuing to offer the solids and relaxing the tongue thrust helped him to start to enjoy eating them. I would suggest just giving it time and continuing to offer solids. Perhaps vary the time you offer solids. Maybe your baby is more receptive to new things in the morning or afternoon or even evening.

We've been doing solids for over a month now, and our LO just isn't into it. We tried rice cereal and for whatever reason he can't tolerate it, it just makes him vomit lots until he has nothing left. We've also tried a few veggies and fruit, but he just doesn't want to eat much and prefers milk. Anyone else experience this?
