@Mrs. Jacks: good to know! I'll try it. Her ped said "we don't recommend juice" but straight corn syrup seems so much worse

Ew that sounds gross. I use corn syrup to make candy, ha. My GI doctor mentioned glycerin suppositories being safe for newborns when I saw her a few months ago. And it's immediate if she's really backed up at the bottom. I dunno, works for me :P

@Mrs. Jacks: I just had a mental image of stool being hydrated. Haha! I've already gone to see the ped once for her constipation, and made another appointment. Hopefully this will pass soon (no pun intended)!

@caffeinated: Undiluted if the constipation is bad. It helps with an osmotic gradient that will hydrate the stool and make it easier to pass (gross, right?!)

And as always, check with your doc!

@Mrs. Jacks: I had to do it twice (brown sugar) because she wouldn't do the juices and the fruit purees weren't working. Each time i did it i wanted to cry! Do you recommend the fruit juices diluted/undiluted?

how long did you do this? it took our LO about 2 weeks to really get back to normal stool. we also massaged his tummy and kept at it with water and prunes on daily basis.

That's very old school. I wouldn't do it personally. We typically recommend pear juice for babies.

I haven't done this, but a family at my daycare did for their infant and they said it worked great. They also gave their LO mangoes and apparently that worked too. Good luck!

@T-Mom: yeah he said if corn syrup doesn't work then to come back and I'm guessing he would prescribe a suppository.

@Mrs. Pen: right? Bleh.

I heard of it as well. We didn't have any on hand, so they said brown sugar water (or mixed with breastmilk) is okay as well. I think it's 1 tsp + 2 tbsp of water. Have you done pureed prunes? That was going well until LO just flat out refused the prunes!! I've tried the juices (pear, apple) but she isn't interested in it anymore.

It took about 12-24 hours for it to take effect. I would probably try it before using the suppositories.

I don't think I would do that. Maybe a suppository? Prunes and water don't help my LO either.

I have heard of this but never done it. We have tried a litle bit of prune juice in milk, or other fruits and fruit juices like pears, pear juice. Just be careful not to overdo it on the fruit juices, or else you will have the opposite problem! Last resort is to use the suppository.. works very well.

DD's ped told me to give her a teaspoon of dark corn syrup...has anyone done this? It sounds so gross and corn syrup is like the last thing I want to give her. We've tried adding water to her diet, she has eaten prunes, nothing seems to be helping.
