We loved Kauai. We stayed on the coconut coast. We went tubing http://www.kauaibackcountry.com/tubing.html and absolutely loved it. You should check whether it's ok to do when pregnant though. I wouldn't see a reason as to why not though.

Have a great time in Kauai! Hawaii was a baby moon possibility, but I think we might do something do something on the east coast. No advice since I've never been to that island yet. I have been to two other islands, but not that one yet.

We did a no-doors helicopter tour and loved it (Jack Harter I believe was the company). We used this book and article to plan most of our trip: http://www.amazon.com/The-Ultimate-Kauai-Guidebook-Revealed/dp/0983888760/ref=dp_ob_title_bk

This past summer we stayed 5 nights and hit the west side for the canyon, south side for the beaches, east side for some shopping and north side for some relaxation. Dukes is a favorite. Go to Hamuras for a local experience. There are tons of places to eat though. It is my absolute favorite island.

We went to Maui and Kauai for our 30th bdays and loved both islands. Kauai is more low-key, and I believe we stayed in the south part of the island. It's fun to drive around the island and visit the canyon. Others have said pretty much what I'd say, too.

We're going to the Big Island and Maui this spring for our 5th wedding anniversary!

Get a car; driving around the island takes a while, but since it's the smallest one it's never very long.

We stayed in Koke'e State Park (they have pretty nice cabins for cheap, but the reservations fill up FAST!) for the first 5 days & then a B&B in Kapa'a the last two days -- but we're hiking people, not beach people. Kauai is my very favorite island -- hope you have a blast!!

@Leialou: We went to Kauai to our baby moon! I was 18 weeks pregnant and thought that was the perfect time to go. We stayed at the south side of the island (Grand Hyatt), but I would recommend staying on the north side (Princeville side) or east side. There's more to do. The main thing on the south side is Waimea Canyon though, and that is worth checking out - though depending on when you go it can be foggy and hard to see anything.

We hiked, drove to the east side of the island and saw the sunrise, ate good food, snorkeled the Napali coast, kayaked, and had a really great time! The one thing I couldn't do that I would've loved to do was to go ziplining. I'll PM you my Kauai list!

Thanks for the tips! It looks like now is a good time to buy flights so I think we are going for it. I've been browsing VRBO and found a couple of ocean view condos that I love. It sounds like if we rent a car we'll be able to explore a good portion of the island. I'm definitely putting all your restaurant and sightseeing recommendations on my list. :)

@smocks: I'm a fan of hot dogs of all kinds, so that probably colors my view ;-) I totally agree that for me the draw of the Beach House was definitely the view. The food was good, but not the best I've had or anything. Although I suppose it's probably still worth going to even just for those spectacular views!

@MrsSCB: Lol I didn't love the puka dogs, although they were highly recommended. The weird mayonnaise-y buttery sauce thing was odd to me. But I don't regret trying them.

Loved the views at the Beach House but the food wasn't memorable to me. I did really like Josselyn's tapas, the lycee sangria was fun!

Kauai is gorgeous. We went a few years back and stayed on the North side (Princeville) but we drove all over the place. If we were to go back, I'd probably stay in Poipu, since I think there is more to do there. The North side was sort of quiet, and it took awhile to drive anywhere. The whole island was really beautiful though. My favorite part was hiking Waimea Canyon State Park. It was just breathtaking. We also loved the restaurant Hukilau Lanai. They have a happy hour special that is a super good deal for a tasting menu.

Have fun! Our trip to Hawaii was so amazing, and I can't wait to go back. We also did the Big Island and I loved that too (for different reasons).

I have! We went for our honeymoon and looooooooved it. We stayed here: http://www.outrigger.com/hotels-resorts/hawaiian-islands/kauai/outrigger-waipouli-beach-resort/overview We liked the hotel and that it had a kitchen. We liked that it was kind of centrally located on the east coast, so easy to explore both north and south. Did not really like that the beach there wasn't great for swimming. We actually ended up going south to Poipu several times and hanging out at this hotel http://kauai.hyatt.com/en/hotel/home.html. They had a very nice beach for swimming and a great pool area. We talked about staying there next time we go.

We LOVED the dinner cruise up the Napali coast, but if you're prone to motion sickness, you may not love it. There were a couple people on our boat that got seasick. I took a non-drowsy seasickness medication and was fine. DH took nothing and was fine. So definitely depends on the person.

We also loved hiking at the Waimea Canyon State Park, if you're up for it. It was absolutely gorgeous. Here's a pic of the actual canyon. If I remember correctly, you don't actually have to hike much to see it, you can drive close. https://johnferebeephotography.files.wordpress.com/2012/05/waimea-canyon-kauai.jpg

Food-wise -- this might sound kind of weird, but for lunch we loved this place called Puka Dog (http://www.pukadog.com), where they had "Hawaiian style hot dogs." They were delicious. Our favorite place to go for breakfast was Hemingway's, this adorable cafe right across from the beach. They had fresh, yummy breakfast (http://www.artcafehemingway.com). My fave fancy dinner spot was Hukilau Lanai (http://www.hukilaukauai.com). We also went to the Beach House (http://www.the-beach-house.com), which is really popular and had gorgeous views but I liked the food at Hukilau better.

ANYWAY, sorry, that was a total novel, but let me know if you have any questions! We would definitely go back, we had a fabulous trip.

We went there for our honeymoon in December 2011. It was AMAZING. We stayed in Poipu (Grand Hyatt). I had friend who stayed up north and they liked it too. But it was so relaxing. We hiked, ate so much fish, did a Napali coast boat tour (highlight of the trip), went ATVing, snorkling tour with turtles, etc. Highly recommend if it you can swing the price! DH and I want to go back every year once he's pulling in a bigger paycheck. One thing - we live in the Midwest and it took FOREVER to get there - one 4 hour plane ride, another 5 hour plane ride. If we did it over again, we would probably spend a day or two in Cali before making the 2nd leg.

I was there for my honeymoon back in 2010. We loved to kauai its such a laid back relaxing island! We stayed in Poipu at the Koa Kea - Theres a lot of great restaurants and shopping in the area. Depending on the time of year its a great spot for whale watching and Spouting Horn was nearby. We also visited a Brewery (Kauai Island Brewery & Grill - Last beer before tomorrow) and a municipal golf course and played 9 holes in Wailua (It was cheap and a beautiful course - i'm not a golfer but my hubs wanted to play)
