@PinkElephant: I save some nicer things- pricer, well made items (there aren't that many, lol), and I also save onesies that I love. I am also saving all their saltwater sandals- I buy for my oldest and youngest gets hand me downs, but I'll save them all even if they're ratty because I love them so much.

I don't know if I'll save anything to give her later. I do have one dress from when I was a baby that I'll be able to put her in soon and one Cheistmas outfit from a sibling that she wore. I will probably just save those and they will be the special saved outfits.

@MaryM: Love it! We have a similar photo of DD1 in a lobster costume my sister saved from her daughters - DD wore it as a snowsuit when we were visiting them and didn't have one. Hilarious!

Eta photo. My niece borrowed them and picked them out one day

We only kept the outfit he came home from the hospital in, some one of a kind things from concerts and stuff, handmade items and OSU gear that maybe they can pass on (assuming my family will always be OSU fans). :)

@MaryM: Hahaha I wonder if she saved the Hee Haw outfit ironically (because she knew it'd be funny some day), or because at the time she put it away she was so pleased with it's coolness. I'm sure that some of the little neon graphic print outfits that melt my heart today will make people say "WTH?!" 20 years from now (heck, probably 5 years from now)

@wrkbrk: Good point with the quilt. Having a purpose makes it easier to select what would work best to save.

I don't think I'll keep them to hand down--I'll probably make a quilt or something with my very favorite and pass down the rest.

@PinkElephant: We're one and done and it's been especially hard parting with things DS has only worn once or a handful of times (he is 8 months tomorrow). I was just randomly adding to a huge pile in our basement, not ready to part with his tiny things.

Then I found about the baby outfit QUILT concept. So now I am saving a few things from each size that I will have made into a quilt along with his hospital blanket and hat. Having a purpose for which to hold onto these few special items made all the difference. Now I feel fine donating 90% of what he's outgrown.

My mom saved a few things for me...just a couple toddler dresses/jumpers and like one pair of jeans. And these hilarious overall shorts that say HeeHaw on them and are covered in chickens. And my baptism dress and first communion dress/veil

I love the stuff that's especially vintage, like the Polly Finders dresses and osh kosh jumpers

I think even once I'm sure our family is complete, I'll save a few really nice pieces, either to give as gifts to friends with babies, or in case the kids want them years later. We are still getting hand me downs from co workers with grown kids and grandkids, and it's so sweet and I would love to give people gifts like that down the road.

@LulaBee: With your love of vintage in mind, what kind of things do you save? Only nicer things, like woven dresses/bubbles? Or do you keep simpler things like cotton rompers if they're particularly cute?

I've got a tub with stuff for both girls- just favorite outfits or sentimental items.

I wish my mom had saved my baby clothes- I love dressing my girls in vintage. My girls may not want them when they're older, but that'll be up to them.

@T.H.O.U.: @ShootingStar: That is my current thinking - a tub seems doable and not excessive. Right now all I've set aside (and not re-used for the next child) are their hospital logo embroidered hat/onesie/blanket and their coming home outfit.

@youboots: I was thinking one outfit in each size would be a good limit to set for myself. It's so hard when everything is so cute! I've already passed on a lot of the generic, pale pink, baby shower gift stuff so what's left are the things I chose myself.

@looch: I think my oldest is like you and will be very nostalgic about anything I save for her...so I probably should take care in doing so (and maybe even get her input - she's 4).

In general, I want to avoid over-hoarding...after witnessing my SIL's bridal shower, I know she will not need any of our hand-me-downs, even if the stars align and the gender/season of the the clothes is perfect for her. And my sister saved some of the "best" things from her girls, who are 9 and 11 years older than my oldest, and a lot of it, while very nice, is just so not what kids wear anymore, that I'm not really interested. So I want to avoid wasting our things in the same way, without tossing everything.

@MrsKoala: Ditto. My mom saved some favorites from each of her three kids, and I was able to use some for my daughter. It was so special for both my mom and I. My mom actually wishes she's saved more. It was so much fun to go through all that she saved when I was pregnant!

the only clothing things I kept were their tiny knit hats from the hospital and a preemie diaper, They bring back the memories without needing lots of objects. We get rid of all other clothing. if there was something really special I would consider holding on to it, but I would rather someone else fet use out of those items

She had some gender neutral clothes that I will re-use for our December boy but after he is done with them, I will get rid of them.

We have a relatively small rubbermaid tub and I put a few things in there. We had a November boy, and now we're having an August girl, so there were a lot of things that couldn't be re-used. I kept things like DS's coming home outfit and the hat he wore in the hospital. DH also had a favorite outfit he loved so I kept that too.

But other than that, I have MOUNTAINS of boy clothes from the first 2 years that are in garbage bags waiting to go to charity.

I have one dress from when I was a baby, I have since mounted it a shadow box. I think I have my coming home outfit too, but I might have misplaced it, sadly. Because I have so little, I treasure it more and have actually done something with it.

For my son, I have a small bin. I am debating what to do with it though, I feel it would be more meaningful if I had it made into a lap quilt or something.

I'm getting into full on nesting mode and was trying to get rid of baby things that simply don't make sense for baby #3 (a fall baby, so she won't get to wear her sisters' rompers/sunsuits in teeny sizes). I was ready to just purge it all, but decided to run it by DH in case there was any outfit he was really sentimental about. Shockingly, he totally derailed me and was all "Don't you think the girls might want some of that? You're saving SOMETHING, right?" And now I'm doubting myself. Because once I start to look closer, it's REALLY HARD to decide which adorable little outfits to keep, and which to send on their way.

What items, if anything, are you keeping to either give to your LOs or simply because you can't let them go?
