Oh, geeze. My husband just called me at work. Apparently the power is out all across town. Looks like we'll probably be going to the hotel tonight afterall. haha.

@Cole: Gah, I cannot believe I didn't even think of the rice socks. I only have like 8 of them. haha. Will definitely use those tonight if need be. A prewarmed bed is a beautiful thing.

I think LO is pretty thrilled to be sleeping on me. We'll be transferring him to the PnP after this ordeal is over and I would be lying if I said I wasn't at all enjoying having him snoozing on me :P

@sarahbee: Thanks for the info! My landlady is possibly the best I've ever had and is really on the ball. I didn't mean to make it sound like she was pushing it off or anything. I should have explained better. She had gotten the heat turned on because it had just started getting cold of the night and I told her about the radiators not working. She told me some things to try and I did and we got heat so I thought we were good, then in the middle of the night it went off again. She was away yesterday when I went to contact her, but I just spoke with her this morning and she'll be coming in to do adjustments tonight. She lives in the same building which only has three apartments, including hers, and it appears we're the only one the heat hasn't been reaching. The temperatures weren't subzero or anything, I really need to get a thermometer for the room so I know how cold it is. But I wasn't super, super concerned since baby hadn't been getting cold. I just want to make sure he doesn't. :P But thanks for the advice!

@birdofafeather: Ooh, those look neat!

I think you have since great suggestions here, especially about pushing for a hotel room if necessary. I would also make dinners in the oven so you get a bit of heat from that. Also try hot water bottles and such. You can fill socks with rice and just tie off the tops and heat those up too. I feel like getting into a cold bed uses up my body heat so quickly and I wind up cold so warming up the bed might be really helpful. Good luck!

@ZombieBullfrogHoller: It just struck me that my previous post might sound harsh or critical and that definitely wasn't my intention. From what I've read on here, you are trying to be the best mamma you can be - and you're doing a *wonderful* job. I was only trying to point out that you may be entitled to more than you think you are. Another possible option if you end up buying the space heater yourself is to tell your landlord what you had to do and then explain that you're going to take the cost of it out of next month 's rent. If you're in PA like your profile says, this may be helpful: http://www.palawhelp.org/issues/housing-and-shelter/tenants-rights

Please, please look into your state's laws. Your landlord is likely required to provide heat, not just *try* to provide heat. So even if she's working on getting it fixed, she may simultaneously need to provide alternative options to get you warm: space heater, hotel room, whatever.

Advocate for yourself and you LO, he's counting on you!

Yikes! I would definitely try to make some alternate arrangements for the night. If you are feeling cold, I'm sure a 10 week old baby is really cold too. Hope the heat gets fixed soon!

I would add a beanie and socks under the pjs. Also, we got a gro-egg thermometer bc our heater sucked and I was worried about LO last winter being a newborn. Some monitors have thermometers but ours didn't so we got that! Works as a nightlight too. :)

I actually work at a hotel. So, if it isn't fixed by tomorrow and I can't get a space heater, I may just ask my manager if we can have a room for the night. Luckily, it's suppose to warm up this week, too. And I keep reminding myself of those Nordic babies that nap in 5 degree weather. :P

You should definitely ask your landlord for either a space heater or a hotel room! Our water heater went out and our landlord offered to put us up in a hotel room or pro-rate our rent for the time we were without hot water. It was the middle of summer so we just dealt with it and boiled water as needed. But with a baby that little you need heat! Hope you get it resolved soon!

Ooh icky! Sorry your having to deal with that. From what I've read, babies sleep best at 65-70 degrees. So if your Lo is in a footed sleeper, and a sleep sack I'm sure he's nice and warm. Something to try might be to have him wear a warm hat or beanie because babies lose their heat from their heads. Hope the heat gets fixed soon!

@yoursilverlining: @Silva: @Corduroy: Eek. *landlady, she. I don't know why I went all gender social norms there o.O Anyway, the landlady isn't shirking responsibility as much as I didn't notify her right away, thinking it was just taking a bit. I think it may be as simple a fix as opening the valve on the one radiator (the one in the front room/bedroom area is the only one I care about at this point), but it's missing a the big knob (I am so clueless with radiators), so do I need to twist it with a wrench or something?

@Foodnerd81: I think I'm going to do that tonight, actually. I just changed him super quick before taking DH to work. Now he's asleep all bundled up in his carseat. I was just going to leave him there for awhile, but I need to give him some saline drops because his nose is all stuffy. Poor, poor kid.

@indi: I was thinking the skin to skin, but I have him so bundled. Logically, the skin to skin makes sense, though.

@yoursilverlining: ditto to that.

And until then, as much skin to skin bundled up under blankets as you can. Babies and mothers generally regulate to the best temp for babies when the baby is resting between the breasts. I hope you guys get heat soon!!

I know this isn't your question, but this is inexcusable behavior by your landlord (and I'm a landlord). Please check the laws in your area relating to heat in winter months; we have them in our state (if you have a minor or elderly person living in the unit). If your landlord doesn't have the issue resolved ASAP in those temps, I would contact my housing court/a lawyer/legal helpline.

Keeping LO close will definitely help him regulate his temperature and keep warm, do you have anything woollen for him to wear? You can also check his temperature by putting two fingers between his shoulder blades.

The last couple of nights have been pretty cold here, in the 30s and high 20s last night. We live in an old apartment building with a coal furnace. Well, it looks like our radiators are having some problems and haven't putting out any heat :| I've spoken with my landlord and he's looking into it. My husband works nights so it's just me and baby (10 weeks). I've been worried about it being too cold for him. I don't know what the actual indoor temperature is, but it's cold. We've all been wrapped in blankets. I've been dressing LO in foot pajamas and sleeper sacks, then having him sleep on my chest/stomach with both of us covered up. I've been feeling his chest to gauge how warm/cold he is. This morning I decided that if my landlord doesn't get the heat situation up and running by tomorrow night, I was going to buy a space heater for the room. But DH's company didn't get his paycheck in today when it was suppose to come in, so I wouldn't be able to get one until Monday. :|

Like I said, I've been using his chest as a gauge as to how cold he is - but will he let me know he's too cold? Like by crying? Any advice on how to better stay warm, if how I'm dressing him is okay/the best solution, things to worry/not worry about that I may not know/realize etc? The worst is middle of the night diaper changes while it's so chilly - he's definitely not happy about those!
