@LCTBQE: My daily commute consists of preventing LO from licking anything on the subway, or putting his hands in his mouth after he's touched something, so gross :meh: His great joy is standing up in my lap and grabbing hold of the pole just like he sees everyone else do - if only he had a cell phone to play with while doing it (which is not happening), he'd be in nirvana - so preventing touching anything is a losing battle...

Hope you all stay healthy!

@LBee: @jape14: @snowjewelz: thanks for responding! so I did keep him home today because I thought @LBee's logic sounded right, and I just felt like it wasn't worth sending him and rolling the dice for another day because if he does get it, I'll probably have him home for a whole week. Realistically he could already have it and be in incubation stages, but I guess it felt like some sort of good faith effort to keep him out of there today. I've been trying to keep him away from her which isn't that hard, it's more that he's always trying to climb on her rock n play/swing/car seat. @jape14: good to know about the shoes and hard surfaces, I do this kind of thing anyway, but I'll wipe down everything with bleach wipes while the baby sleeps and do all his linen and stuff. and gross/lol about your ped's baby with the shoe. When I lived in NYC I used to see really little kids on the subway licking the poles and seats sometimes  dunno if it made them half-mutant superhumans or put them in the ICU.

I'm guessing you've already decided whether you're keeping him home or not. Just as a heads up that I got from my ped when my ~8 month old got HFM despite not being in daycare and my 3.5 year old not getting it - coxsackie is surface stable meaning it can be transmitted more easily through shoes, etc. So my 3.5 year old likely brought it home from preschool on his shoes, and my teething/mobile 8 month old got it because she was at that perfect stage putting her mouth/body on everything and hadn't developed the immunity to it yet. Our ped said her kid got it at that age because she legit LICKED one of her shoes that she had worn while, ya know, treating kids with HFM all day.

I wouldn't freak out bc it's much easier to keep a newborn separated, but just be careful about things like shoes, backpacks, etc. And probably give hard surfaces/shoes a good wipe down/lysoling, extra hand washing, that kind of thing.

Ugh, that's hard! I had two winter babies and my 2nd was totally fine with my first in daycare full time. Fortunately, DD1 has been in daycare since 10 months so I think she got the "sick bug" out of the way right before her sister came along?!

I would just make sure he knows not to touch the baby or even hover near her; I'd babywear her as much as possible to keep her near you and not him and everyone just wash hands, sanitize and stay healthy!

I've never really taken my kids out of school and I def remember days/weeks where kids were just out. DD1 had gottten coxsackie once and it was NOT fun

I would keep the 2 year old home if you have the option. It looks like coxsackie’s incubation period is 3-5 days so I would assume by Monday the kids who are going to have it (including your son) will have already gotten it. If it wasn’t Friday tomorrow I’d probably feel differently.

As for your daughter, I’d try not to borrow worry. I’d probably encourage your toddler not to be as touchy feely until Monday, but otherwise just cross your fingers.

My 25-month-old goes to daycare full time at a wonderful place that is super clean, and I have a newborn 6-week-old at home--I've been keeping my toddler in daycare while I'm on mat leave. Yesterday at pickup they told me that one kid had Coxsackie that she'd gotten from an older sibling, but she was kept home. Today at pickup FIVE kids were out with it--almost half the class. They're going nuclear and bleaching everything over there, but I'm so worried that my son will get it and give it to the newborn. So far he hasn't exhibited any symptoms or fever... I could deal with it sucking a lot if he had it, but for the baby it sounds actually dangerous.

Has anyone been through something like this? Wondering if I should preemptively keep the 2-year-old home tomorrow or just douse him in hand sanitizer when I pick him up. Thoughts?
