@LaughLines: I had a family member who did this growing up. I didn't learn until much later that it's called "pocketing" and is a lot more common than I realized! It can be tied to a bunch of things: an oral sensory issue, food insecurity (often related to adoption), mouth pain (teething or a cold sore can cause an aversion to eating/swallowing), an oral motor issue, and other stuff too.

If you google "pocketing food" and various ages, there's a lot more information on how to address it!

Yes! For a while my LO would stuff bacon in her cheeks and we wouldn't find out for hours afterwards. I was grossed out, but impressed by the amount that she could hold on to.

Mine did that! It was a short phase; around 8-9 months, only for a few weeks?

My son did this from about 9 months -14 months off and on. From what I could tell it was related to him teething. it was disgusting, but I didn't fight it other than clearing out his mouth before he fell asleep.

My 9 month old is eating table foods really well - she loves it and has gotten really good with her pincher grasp and not choking. Recently she started saving food in her cheeks, it doesnt seem like it's because she cant swallow but more like she likes the taste or enjoys sucking on it.

Any other babies do this? I don't really see a problem with it, so i let her do it - just curious
