My DD did this - for a long time. It was like a squirrel storing food for the winter (in fact, squirrel is one of her nicknames). If we weren't paying attention, she would keep it in there for hours. But, my daughter is a big one for phases: storing food, chewing her hair, biting her fingernails, etc. All of the phases eventually went away, I don't remember how long she did the food storing thing - but it went away on its own.

@littlejoy: she's almost 2! Definitely old enough to reason with, but she doesn't seem to care. Sometimes if she REALLY wants an M&M, she'll swallow so she can eat the chocolate. Other times, no bribing or reasoning will work, so I have to pry it out. It's weird because she's otherwise very obedient and eager to please. But this is something she is very stubborn about.

Do you offer drinks during meal time? I would think if she was trying to drink, she'd swallow it.

How old is she? Old enough to reason with her? Like, "you can have another cracker if you swallow what's in your mouth"?

Our babe was doing this at 10 months, but stopped by 11 months. I found a piece of broccoli in her mouth over an hour after lunch one day.

So, lately (like the past week or two), Sadie has picked up a lovely habit of keeping chewed up food in her mouth. She doesn't play with it, she just chews it up and lets it sit in there. Forever. Yes, it's as disgusting as it sounds. She does it mostly with crackers. She will just let the food sit in there until I can somehow bribe her to swallow or I physically pull it out, which makes me gag/throw up. It happens 1-2 times per day.

Anyone else have experience with this? Any one know why she would be doing it? How do I stop it?!
