Thanks, everyone. Those are all great ideas. Today I tried waiting until we'd been outside a few minutes to put her hat on and it worked! I think I will also buy one of the hats you've suggested.

If you can't get a hat to stay on at all, you could go the other route and bulk up layers on the core. So add on fleece vests under the coat.

For the walk to daycare, you could suit the stroller up with a JJ Cole Bundleme: https://www.amazon.com/JJ-Cole-Bundleme-Stealth-Toddler/dp/B000G7YO7M

I had great success with my son using an ear warmer, one of those bands that goes around the head.

I've had good luck with these. My baby and preschooler wear them even when they aren't happy about it. I think the baby wears the 2-3 year size.

We have a hat that buttons under the chin -- any other hat gets pulled off immediately!

DS has always hated hats. Last winter there was no way he would let us suit him up inside but if we waited until we were in the cold for 5 or 10 minutes before slipping one on he let it stay put.

That's the only way he'd wear sunglasses too - after he felt the discomfort of bright light first.

My son hates hats too but for some reason we got a cable knit hat with Sherpa lining with a Velcro chin strap last winter and for some reason he didn't tear it off when we put it on at the store. So we bought it and he wore it all winter!

DD is 15 months and hates having anything on her head. Hats and hood are torn off immediately. But she loves playing outside, we walk to school, and it's getting cold (30 degrees this morning!). Are there any miracle hats they actually like? Do you give up and let them freeze? She was literally turning purple at the park yesterday.
