Yeah I'd stay away for at least another day. Even as a scientist that studies infectious disease,
I just can't get my mind around all the bugs that are constantly circulating that make one vomit.
God I hate vomit.

No way would I send my child. Stomach bugs are incredibly contagious and I just wouldn't trust anyone to sanitize or quarantine sufficiently.

Flu is contagious for so long that she will be exposed even if you send her next week. So I would send her and ask for extra hand washing etc.

We had the stomach flu before Christmas. I take care of a toddler and he had it over the weekend and they kept him home on Monday just to be safe even though they said he was better. Then Tuesday the mum and dad had it so they kept him home again to be safe. He came to me on Thursday and he started with diarrhea just before lunch time. He stayed home Griday and by Friday afternoon I had it and then my toddler daughter had it Friday night. I was really careful about washing my hands too.

Apparently stomach flu is contagious for 48 hours after symptoms disappear, in feces. My daughter was really sick for a whole week after getting it and it was awful. I thought we would be hospitalized. They didn't send their kid for the whole next week (out of fear he would get it again as my daughter had diarrhea for a week) and when they couldn't take care of him and their mum couldn't they did manage to find a daily stop in home daycare. I wouldn't risk it because stomach flu and the regular flu are so contagious. I know it sucked for them and for me too, but it happened. Everyone they came into contact with got it which was a whole bunch of people at a funeral for a family member... I'd use your days off as much as that sucks.

@Silva: @DesertDreams88: It's the stomach flu. If it were the actual flu I would definitely keep her home, not only for her, but also for me as I'm pregnant.

DD is 2.5. We had a similar situation when she was an infant, and that time I kept her home without hesitation because she was so little.

@yellowbird: That's what I'm thinking. I just know I'll be walking on eggshells the next few days. We've had the stomach flu in our house twice in the past eight months, and when DD gets it, we all get it! Plus, we are spending the weekend with family and I will feel terrible if she does have the flu and gives it to them.

@Truth Bombs: ehhh, not exactly - even the website says it is only 1.3 days shorter. http://www.tamiflu.com/what-is-tamiflu#BU7vwYEdjiFz1QXQ.97 .... and that's just symptoms, not about the presence of the virus.

My husband had the flu in April (diagnosed by swab test) and he took Tamiflu. He had significant symptoms for 5 days and felt cruddy for 8. Our ped recommend 5-7 days of quarantine since my baby was 11 weeks old at the time.

@DesertDreams88: just FYI if she took tamiflu in time the length of the flu could have been significantly shorter.

I've been in this exact situation. I thought of it the same way as your husband that if I kept taking the days and other people ended up sick I would never go back to work. I sent her and it timed out fine.

Our home daycare was a stay at home mom and her two kids, so no one else's kids were involved though. She also would watch my daughter if she came down with an illness and I still needed to work. ❤

How old is DD?

I personally would keep her home for another day... to me saving leave isn't as important as decreasing the chance of the flu.

Also, true flu lasts 5-10 days, and is contagious for that entire time.

Is this the actual flu or do you mean a stomach bug? In our state there are pretty strict restrictions around the flu because it can be so dangerous to vulnerable people- I wouldn't risk spreading it further.

@littlejoy: No one is available unfortunately, and the other few daycare kids are going I guess. Out daycare provider's daughter is old enough that she doesn't need to be taken care of by mom and can isolate herself, so that does make me feel a little more comfortable sending her.
But flu. Ick.

That's so hard. I kept our LO home last year for 4 days because a few kids had HFMD, and had been at school when their fevers were discovered. It sucked - I didn't have the time really, but I knew HFMD would be a two week ordeal.

Thinking of your situation, I think that mom should be free to take care of her LO. Do you have a friend who could watch your LO tomorrow?

That's tough! While on PTO I sent DS to daycare. During drop off the teacher advised one of the kids had a nasty cough. DS may have been exposed already, but I regret just not taking him home. He had a nasty cold, double ear infection, and pink eye. Hindsight is 20/20- I'd stay home. Not sure if an extra day will keep your LO safe, but maybe the rest of week.

DD goes to an in home daycare and has been at home the past two days because her provider came down with the flu. DH stayed home with her Monday and my mom watched her today. Tonight we got notice that the provider will be open tomorrow, but now her daughter has the flu. She will be quarantined tomorrow, and our provider is really good about sanitizing.

Our whole family was hit with the stomach flu a few weeks ago, and I really don't want to relive that, so I'm considering taking tomorrow off and keeping DD home another day. The concern I have is that this has already been a nasty winter and I've taken three sick days already. I'm trying to save as much time as possible for my maternity leave coming up. I HAVE the days, so I can use them, but the leave is a consideration. It's not an option to have DH or my mom watch her tomorrow.

DH did point out that even keeping her home one more day doesn't guarantee anything, as others in her family could get sick.

So, if you were in my position, what would you do?

Edited to add that another child who goes there has been healthy, but his mom was sick over the weekend too. I'm hoping if he was going to get the flu he would already have it though. :/
