Facebook primarily. Emails and FaceTime or Skype too. Occasional texts. It's always been us moving, and we made time/will make time to see close friends/family during visits.

All of my closest friends live overseas. I still manage to FaceTime with my best friend a few times a week. We call when he's getting ready in the morning and it's the middle of the afternoon for me. Another of my friends has a 9 hour time difference so FaceTime doesn't really work. We use a video messaging app called Glide to keep each other up to date and we each use it a few times a week. It's fun and more convenient than writing out long email updates. We also all follow each other on different social media outlets.

Facebook works best for us. I think the posting of each other kid's pictures keeps us in the loop. I'm a big FB user and most of my closer friends are, too. If you aren't into FB or never have been, it's hard. Luckily, my friends have be on FB for a few years or more.

DH's friends are somewhat on facebook. His one best friend is not on FB but his wife is. You can tag her but since we are tagging her and not him... I'm not sure if he gets it or understands it. What's sad is his best friend isn't a big texter, either. So his texts usually go unanswered. They do call each other but the time zone difference and we both have kids so it's hard.

Most of my closest friends have moved far away, and we have kept in touch in two ways: 1) when my friends would visit New York (or vice versa), I'd always take time off to spend with them or 2) we'd have occasional marathon conversations on the phone (2-3 times a year). Plus we'd shoot an email back and forth now and then.

I moved across the globe though, and now both of those modes of communication aren't really working. I've switched to more regular emails, but it's not the same. I hope to get faster broadband so that Skype calls are a bit easier!

How do you keep in touch with close friends who live far away?
