@PinkElephant: Do you think it would make a difference if you used it in conjunction with a backless booster? I thought this would be a good option for my 4 year old, but now I am not so sure.

We always bring a car seat on the plane with us. LO uses it for takeoff and landing, but is usually in our laps a lot of the flight.

@daniellemybelle: LOVE!

I have caved and made sure there are carseats for each kid at each grandparent's house (so 3 sets in total, including a set for our house). The grandparents each bought one carseat (for my first DD), and we've bought additional ones.

On vacation, I've only ever taken the capsule seat. Otherwise we've rented when we get there, which I realize isn't ideal.....but even at 3, my oldest isn't large enough for the vests that are actually well rated. I have one of the Ride Safer vests (which I only use in taxi rides involving no highway driving), which has been discontinued in the US, and have zero faith in it for doing anything other than preventing a kid from getting entirely thrown out the window in a collision. She'd still get tossed around pretty badly in a highway crash. :(

@daniellemybelle: I love this. I could totally picture my kid sitting on the floor playing with his cars on the seat. Last time we took Amtrak, he killed like an hour playing on the floor of the train car. Is it filthy? Sure. Could he go catapulting into the side of the train? Possibly. But it's either that or my fellow passengers can listen to him cry because he has to sit in a tiny seat for 3 hours.

We haul the car seats with us. It's a pain but once they're checked in, it's not so bad. One of the seat also converts into a stroller so we're only really lugging one seat around.

Our plan for our upcoming trip when LO will be nearly four months old is to check the carseat since it's free, wear her through security/on the plane (lap infant on the plane), and then install our carseat into the rental car when we arrive. She will be in our arms on the shuttle van, both the one from the parking lot to the airport at our home airport and the one from the airport to the rental car at our destination.

We've done a variety of things. We've brought our own car seat on the flight and gate checked it, ds has flown as a lap infant mostly until our last flights to/from NYC when he had his own seat. We've rented car seats, we've had car services that come with car seats installed, we've ridden taxis in NYC without a car seat for DS.

We are flying in a few weeks and LO will be a lap child. My family will meet us with a car seat they used for a child recently. I would have liked to fly her in her car seat for safety reasons but financially it was not an option.

It will be rough after she turns 2 and we have to pay for her seat but then we will definitely use her car seat on the plane.

@avivoca: I'll be honest, I can't imagine having him sit in the car seat for 14 hours from Korea, and legally we could have just hopped in a cab (car seats not required) when we got home but we figured a car service was a better choice.

@hotchildinthecity: No, it's not. I used to be part of CSFTL on Facebook but had to leave because of all the drama and "best practice" stuff. So, best practice is to always bring your seat, have your child in a seat on the plane, and never use a seat with unknown history (rented seats, seats from Uber/car companies, secondhand seats, seats that have been checked on an airplane).

@hotchildinthecity: Generally, renting a car seat isn't recommended because you don't know the history of the seat, and sometimes the seat provided isn't an appropriate seat for your child.

We'll either bring our seat or buy a new one specifically for traveling. I'm interested in getting a Harmony Defender and using it as her big girl seat when she turns two. We're likely flying somewhere this fall and I've been looking into what we'll need as far as car seats go.

We’ve done a bit of everything: we’ve brought our car seat (checked it, never used one on a plane) and used it once we got to our destination, we’ve rented car seats several times with rental cars, we’ve hired private car services that came with an installed car seat for LO, we've borrowed friend's car seats and used them in a rental car and we’ve gone on busses and in taxis with no car seat.

@mrbee: We've taken our car seat with us on the plane. We've had the in-laws take it with them when they drove instead of flown. We haven't rented one because the places we've gone don't offer it. My brother rented all the gear when they went to Denver and were really happy with the service. The bad part about the vest thing is that the kids might start refusing to sit in their normal car seat when you return home. My DS is very flexible and wouldn't push back but my nieces are the type that if you let them get bye with it once there is no going back.

Safety wise, you need to have children fly in car seats. It is not safe to check or gate check the seats due to the damage they can sustain being tossed around. Before we knew better we flew with DD as a lap infant at 4 months and my mom picked us up with a carseat. Now we just bring the seat with us. I would definitely use a harness when our DDs are old enough, but then would have to ensure that whoever picks us up brings a seat already installed in their car, or pack and carry-on a booster if they are old enough for that.

@bunnylove08: Good tip, thanks.

I should just convince my parents to buy a car seat to keep at their house in Florida. They have 10 grandkids, 6 of whom are still in car seats and/or boosters. Then we'd just need a CARES harness that we could share amongst all the siblings.
