Good question! My son is 4 and he's pretty cautious, but I have noticed he doesn't follow directions so well when he's on his scooter. I'll tell him to stop at a certain place, for example and he blows right through it. It isn't because he can't stop, he knows full well how to use the brake, he does it when he wants to.

Even before my son was riding a bike, I've always stressed how important it is to follow our directions on the street and what might happen if he were to run into the street on his own. I am very dramatic about it and he understands. So far so good. The only thing I really worried about when he first started riding was whether he can control when to slow down and stop. So in the beginning, I would have him practice stopping in the middle of a block and slowly increase the distance. As long as I can get him to follow the rules, his sister will follow as well. He's in charge of keeping her in check on the street now and has been really good at it.

We do it like this, I tell DS how far ahead he can go, to the red car, the trash can, the blue store, whatever, and he can go that far and has to stop and wait until I catch up. He is a great rule follower, so it works well for us. I don't know how I will manage when I have 2 on wheels, but I think by DS should be pretty trustworthy by then.

LO is only 2.5 and I only have to manage him, but luckily he is pretty scared of cars/the street actually. So he gets nervous when he gets too close. And he knows that if he ever broke the rule and stepped onto the street without me, he would immediately be off the scooter and into the stroller.

Normally when we walk, I can easily make sure both kids are safe. But when one is on a bike and the other is on a scooter, it can be a challenge to keep up with them! We have a "three trees" rule - the kids aren not supposed go more than three trees ahead of me. I worry when they're on a bike or scooter though, because if they broke the rule and started flying towards the busy street, I'm pretty sure I couldn't catch up with them!

How do you keep kids safe when they're zipping ahead on the sidewalk on a bike or scooter?
