@Mrsbells: Unfortunately, my son is picky about temps so I need to wean him off needing everything cold. :)

@Mommy Finger: all the snacks we send in can be eaten at room temp. Things like carrot sticks, grapes and sliced apples are all fine at room temp. Our school prefers an easy access quick snack that doesnt need to be kept cold.

I packed my son's snack separately, in a smaller one of those BUILT NY bags. Since lunch was at 11:30, snack was around 9:30 so I didn't worry too much about keeping it chilled. but since your snack is so much later, I would possibly look into one of those small bags that you can freeze, the name is escaping me.

I got a Costco lunch bag for his yum box and it came with a flat ice pack so I plan to have the yum box with the lunch stuff and pack a reusable snack bag or whatever outside the yumbox but still in the lunch bag. It’s a Roots lunch bag (I’m in Canada...not sure if you guys have Roots stuff in the US?!)

@Mommy Finger: search the brand “Fresh & Fit Kids” on Amazon. They have all different sizes and shapes of container that have slim ice packs that snap into the top. So easy! Here’s a link to some small round ones. They also have small rectangular ones, or a multipack with all different shapes and sizes.

@Mommy Finger: I can think of veggies my kid likes that would be fine at room temp, like baby carrots, baby tomatoes, sugar snap peas. You can’t send like a granola bar?

We have a similar set up at my boys' school. I think most fruit and veggies would be fine at room temperature. We use ziploc baggies and have so far stayed away from anything that needs strict refrigeration. But I've got my eye on some mini ice packs I've seen at Walmart that would pair nicely with the reusable bag recommended above.

Just my two cents.

A frozen yogurt or cheese stick will defrost to the right temp. Otherwise, I would make no nut trail mix (raisins, sunflower seeds, yogurt chips, dried fruit) and send whole fruit.

Mini packit freezable bag? (Probably still big)

What about a reusable sandwich bag with a small/flat ice pack? Seems like largest of these might work?

@Mommy Finger: what time is snack? For a couple hours I would think most things would be fine at room temp but it depends on the timing.

I'm new to this whole packing a lunch/snacks as we were spoiled with our previous daycare providing everything. Now that DS1 is in kindergarten we have to pack him a lunch and a healthy snack. We are fine with lunch but I have a question about how to pack his snack. We need to keep it separate from his lunch and it has to be something healthy like fruits/veggies/cheese&crackers etc. How do I keep that chilled? I don't want to have 2 lunch boxes but haven't seen anything smaller that I could use a small ice pack with. I'm sure I"m overthinking this and know not everything necessarily needs to be refrigerated. Any suggestions?
