@septemberlove: That is so beyond special, a hug from your grandpa, indeed. Congratulations!

@beebug: I'm right there with you.

I think I'm pretty lucky to live in a generally progressive place, and I really don't think people are going to be really that offended when I give them the general range of "late September". That, and I guess I'm not really that concerned about offending the randoms in the grocery store. I just figure the less I SAY the date, the less I'll get attached to it and be frustrated when it comes and goes. It may backfire, but I'd rather not go for a repeat of last time, so I'm just trying something different.

@runsyellowlites: I am doing exactly what you've written for any future pregnancies. For LO in October, I de-activated facebook and only looked at my cell for texts from DH, the amount of people that called/emailed texted as my due date neared, came, then passed? Drove me mental. If I am really forced to say a date I will say a month past my actual due date, people are cray cray.

If there is somewhere that actually needs to know the date (like HR at work) that I can handle.

Not the due date, but I did keep the c-section date a secret! My family were pretty pissed about it but it was all forgotten when they received a totally unexpected text that baby A was here. We also kept the name and gender a secret until she arrived. I was pretty unpopular for a few weeks but everyone got over it :)

My baby is due on my grandpas birthday. He and I were very close and it broke my heart that he never got to see DH and I get married. I bawled at my dating ultrasound when they told me the due date. I've shouted it from the rooftops. To me, it's very special, regardless of when LO actually arrives. It was like a hug from my grandpa when the tech told me the date. Everyone hopes he comes on his due date but knows that he might not. I was due on my other grandfathers birthday but came late. It's still special that that was my due date :)

@LittleGBee: I would like to do this next time around. I don't know if I could keep it up but I think it would help my sanity toward the end.
This time I told strangers "May" and that was enough for them.

@dookie32: I agree.

I'm going to be honest and say that I've never heard of anyone doing that and personally I'd be a bit annoyed.

The baby is going to come when it wants to regardless of you being attached to a certain day or because other ppl are anxious about your due date coming closer.

I mean kudos to you if you can do it and not offend someone or get too much grief but me personally, I don't see the big deal.
It's part of being visibly pregnant. Ppl want to know when you are due. Esp family. Not telling family baffles me to be honest.

But, do what you feel is right.

@MrsTiz: I feel like mid to late September is sufficient enough information to help them get excited. :)

@Msmini: Yeah, I suppose they do "know", but do they really respect that? Our daughter was 9 days "late" and I was just so uncomfortable and annoyed at the end that I got tired of the incessant "has that baby come yet?"

@MrsMeNow: Lol, don't they do that anyway?

@GRIZZ: I'm a fairly private person also, thanks for the encouragement. I like your nonchalant response, I think I might adopt it for strangers.

@ArtBee, @Blackbird, @Plaidpants: Yeah, I'm not exactly comfortable lying. But I am comfortable being terribly vague. So annoying, I know.

@Dookie32: I assure you I'm not trying to be like Beyonce. I'm mostly trying to protect myself and not get too attached to a date. Trust me, I know that pregnancy comes with annoying questions. It's not my favorite part of the gig, but whatevs.

@Runsyellowlites: Awesome. Thanks for sharing your experiences. We're trying for a home birth as well.

I'm not keeping it a secret on purpose, but I say mid-July because I know July 14th does not mean baby will be born July 14th! Plus my due date has been moved already...if they press I tell them the date, but for most people 'mid-July' works fine.

I tell people I'm due in early April, not because I'm trying to obfuscate, but just because..I don't know....that's what I do. And pretty much no one has questioned it. Of course my family and friends know THE date.

I guess part of the reason I don't tell is that a due date is such a weird concept to me, considering you're technically "full term" for like, a five week window that it seems weird to pinpoint one specific day.

@LittleGBee: *raises hand*

We did that!!!!!! and I LOVED IT!!! We told most everyone "Early April" or "The first part of April"... if they pushed the subject I told them "If I'm still pregnant on Tax day you can start asking". My edd was April 1st and knew there was no way I could make it to April 15th so I was good. lol

Pros
1. I wasn't pressured into intervening when I went past my edd.
2. I didn't get any calls/fb messages/etc "Is the baby here yet?..".
3. I felt more okay with going overdue and didn't start stressing until I was 41+3 b/c if I made it to 42 weeks I couldn't homebirth and I was an automatic repeat cesarean.

Cons
1. I got some pretty offended looks when I didn't share. I also got these same looks about being team green though. Turns out people just feel it's there right to know everything about your pregnancy. O_o

Next time we'll do the same thing. =)

To be honest I've never heard of anyone doing this and if I asked someone when they were due and they were vague like that I would find it really odd- like they thought they were Beyonce trying to tip off the paparazzi or something. Being annoyed with questions and comments when you are pregnant is part of the deal unfortunately- just roll with it.

My EDD is May 2nd and I will have a c-section but I don't know the date yet. It is killing my MIL & FIL because they both have late April bdays and they want the baby to share their bday. I keep telling them that a scheduled c-section might not happen...I might go into labor first! :-)

I never tell anyone my due date unless I'm very close to them. Especially strangers... I'm a very guarded and private person anyway. Why do I need to tell a stranger on an elevator when my baby is expected to arrive? I just say 'June'. If they press I say 'beginning of June. Not sure. He measures a little differently every time I have an appointment.'

I also want to avoid people hassling me about whether I've had him or not yet when the due date passes. One of my friends literally got tons upon tons of calls, texts, FB posts etc when she went overdue of people asking "Have you had that baby yet?!" She said it just added to her stress and anxiety about baby being late, and whether or not she'd have to be induced. She finally sent people to this website. Priceless. haha

A con I think this would add to having family stress towards the end about if there are any signs of the baby coming. I can picture my family calling the whole month they knew I was due when I wasn't even due for several more weeks. @MrsTiz had a good suggestion to help curb this.

I think baby will come when it is ready anyways so I am having a hard time thinking of a pro.

I think my SIL is trying to do this, but I kept thinking I just forgot and kept asking her when she's due. I'm annoying! I finally realized and stopped asking!

When I got pregnant, a friend told me to just tell everyone a date at least two weeks past my actual due date, so that people wouldn't harass me about being late, etc. It was a smart idea, but I was already like 4 months along and had told everyone my actual due date. Next time!

I think most people KNOW that babies don't have a timer that pops them out on the due date. I don't know anyone IRL that has kept the due date a secret (though I do know people that have lied and given a date 1-2 weeks later than the actual due date).
