@winniebee: We have a door monkey. It is well above his head. However, the door will be slightly ajar. Unfortunately, it only helped for a few months. Then he started screaming at the door for an hour. The bedroom door is next to the living room in our two bedroom apartment.

@winniebee: I'm not sure I like it, but in the past month or so i've put a baby gate back on my soon-to-be three year old daughter's door. The getting out of bed and coming downstairs at bedtime/naptime was out of control. I give her a few chances with getting out of bed at nap or bedtime, then the gate gets locked. Her bedroom door stays open, and I do promise to open it up after she falls asleep so that she can leave her room on her own when she wakes up. I've only had to close it a few times; the threat of having it closed is enough to keep her in bed.

Our LO figured out how to take the child-proof covers off in .2 seconds.

This whole situation made us realize our LO is actually pretty motivated by rewards. We got a little piggy bank, and if she stays in her room, she gets a penny when she wakes up. She loves putting the pennies in.

We also do a super boring put back in bed if she gets up. I just say, "Oh, I see you came out of your room. It's time to sleep. I'm going to put you back in your bed. Goodnight." - I just do it as many times as it takes (literally, it's been 20 times before, ughhhh).

@winniebee: Hehe this was such a huge issue for us that when we moved into our new house a month ago, DH went out to Home Depot that same afternoon and bought/installed a round doorknob on DD's door. I could not cope if she had the freedom to roam the house all night.

@PawPrints: ah lucky! he runs out of his room repeatedly.

@catlady: I thought about that today too. I decided to rock him and since he fell asleep in literally one minute that was the path of least resistance. I'm guessing that he will require some sort of something for naps from now on. Just sucks because before he would sleep 2-3 hours in his crib without a peep. Why do they have to grow up!?

We rub her back for a minute to calm her and we say see you soon ans she usually will roll over and go to sleep, sometimes when I walk out she will pop up asking for more back rubs lol

We just did the same thing we did before, when she was in a crib - walked out of the room and closed the door behind us. She may get out of bed to go get a book or a toy, but she ends up back in bed and goes to sleep.

I will warn you that if you start this, it will probably become permanent but what worked for us was to sit in her room with her until she fell asleep. I think we had to start doing that at around your LO's age. We basically did it until she dropped naps completely. I remember always being annoyed about it, but she kept naps until age 3.5 so I don't really regret it. I think she got at least an extra 6 months of naps out of it. (She actually still naps at daycare but it's impossible at home now so we don't try anymore).

R is 28 months and we recently switched him to a bed in his brother's room. Bed time started out horrendously but seems to have slowly improved, though he still gets out of bed multiple times at night before settling in for the night. Fridays and weekends are his days to nap at home. He's been napping on a cot at school since Sept. He typically naps 2-3 hours at home and always went down w/o a peep in his crib. Last week, sitter was here because of school vacation and she got him down for naps in the bed every day. We were away over the weekend. He had school this week and napped there. He was yawning and ready for his nap and ran up for nap time and pretty much just wanted to go to bed. Then got out 30 times. He laughed, ran around, made up excuses, and eventually scratched my face and hit me when I tried to hold him to calm him down. I only had 2 hours before I had to pick up his brother so I ended up rocking him for a few mins to get him to go to sleep.

What are your tips for getting your spirited toddler to stay in bed at nap time?
