I do a very similar thing to @LindsayInNY: with the very vague password hint that probably only I can understand but I e-mail myself the website and my user name (I usually have a common one but sometimes it's already taken and I have to use another one) and then when I get the email I file it under a hidden folder just in case my email gets hacked. :)

I can't use the same passwords for things because work passwords, bank and most money-related accounts require me to change it every 4-8 weeks. So I always have to come up with something new.

I try to keep them in an old address book I have... though it's not entirely efficient because I tend to misplace it.

I have the same few. When I'm really lost I hit the "forget password?" link. I actually forget my usernames more often.

I write it in my notepad that is kept in a secret place. The passwords are also written in code that sometimes I forget too. (There is an alphabet for a number and the description of the password basically) LOL

I also use last pass and like it a lot. I also do variations of one password for sites that aren't important and include the name of the site or company in it. For example my password for here might be passhellobeeword. I don't do this for anything linked to a credit card or otherwise personal info though.

I work in a field that requires me to have multiple strong passwords that I keep in my head. I use the following trick to keep them straight. Find a song you know and love. Take the
first letter of each word of the song, so for the national anthem you get oscysbtdel (Oh say can you see..), vary the capitalization, and add a numeric and character sequence -- OscysBtdeL!1841! -- and voila you have a very strong, impossible to guess, password that you can remember as long as you remember your song. Then just make your hint the song name.

I use the same passwords for most things. If I write them down, I don't write down the whole thing. Although, if someone finds what it is, I'm outta luck anyways? So, is password is: Password1, I'll write down P*******1, for example.

@Happygal: I was so sick of hitting "forgot password" links that I just got a small notebook that either lives in my purse or at my desk at home. I have SO MANY passwords - bank accounts, email, work email, huggies rewards, credit card, student loans, my fitness pal, fit bit, Target.com, the list goes on!!! ..... :)

@Happygal: I wish websites listed their password requirements. It would make my life so much easier if I knew before entering my password. Some have more strict requirements and some don't. Some require an uppercase letter and that has been the ones I always forget.

Thanks everyone! I have variations of the same password, and that's what kills me--trying to remember if I used uppercase, lowercase, numbers, special characters, etc. I'll have to check out one of the apps, although I do feel a little nervous it.

@JoyfulKiwi: Discover Card now locks you out if you mess up your password a certain amount of times. The only way you can get it unlocked is to call them. I've had to call them twice in the past 5 months! :bummed:

@Happygal: I have about 3 or 4 that I rotate based on the requirements for a password (does it require numbers, can I use punctuation, etc.)

I just remember the ones I use regularly. But I write down the ones that I don't use very often. I find it's usually easier to have them remind you of a log in than to have to keep resetting passwords, so if I have to write down a password, I don't write down the log in. Then I feel more secure.

How do you keep track of your passwords? An online site, pen and paper, your memory?

I mainly try to remember mine, but it's so annoying when I can't remember, especially for sites I don't visit that often. I need a better plan!
