my dog had kennel cough and we didn't even know - so it went untreated for at least a week (at least because he probably had it while he was at the shelter - where we adopted him from) and by the time we brought him into the vet (he had a runny nose & wasnt very playful for a 8 week old pup) he had developed a respiratory infection. =T

@Cole: awwww! Yea my dog is miserable right now too! I'm sad he has to wait until 5 pm tomorrow to go. He keeps on like puking a little when he coughs... That's good to know though after a week he can go back!

My heart breaks every time he has a coughing attack....but yea pretty much the only thing that sets him off is when he's excited. And he's a chocolate lab, so seeing a leaf blow outside is pretty exciting, lol

I literally just got back from the vet this afternoon for the same thing. We got a two week course of antibiotics and 5 days worth of cough medicine. The vet tech said he could go back to doggy daycare after a week on antibiotics but I forgot to double check with the vet. I feel so sad for the poor dog, he looks so scared when he coughs so I am glad we have a way to fix it now. For him getting excited is a big trigger too.

@MrsBrewer: I'm glad he's sleeping at least. My dog would start and then couldn't stop. We couldn't sleep and I just wanted to cry and hug him I felt so bad! We were miserable. He didn't like honey to soothe his throat so I finally thought about how milk makes you really phlegmy but I knew that would probably come back to haunt me.
But I figured I would either be up all night trying to soothe a sick doggie or outside all night while he pooped it all out so I had nothing to lose. Turns out he loved it and I never got one bad side effect from it! Lol

@Danizaur: Thanks for all the info!!! :-) We didn't have ours boarded or anything, I think he just contracted it at the dog park (probably from sharing water bowls or just playing) But I've heard that too about the vaccine that it really doesn't do much. It's just a legality.

Good to know about the cortisone shot, hopefully they will give him one at the vet tomorrow! He doesn't cough all the time, he just gets bad spurts. Luckily he's been sleeping all night, but when he gets excited, or just wakes up is when he coughs.

Our dog has a pretty sensitive stomach, so I might hold off on the milk, just because I really don't want him getting diarrhea! lol

My dog just got over it a few weeks ago.We boarded him for a vacation just a week after he got his vaccination for it but he still contracted it. The vaccination apparently doesn't cover even half the strands of it. My vet doesn't even do it unless it's required by a kennel, which it was. Anyways we took him in and he got a cortisone shot and a weeks worth of antibiotics. The cortisone shot stopped his coughing immediately except for an isolated one here or there. The antibiotics were just to prevent an infection. The vet didn't ask for a follow up. Just said to call him if he's still coughing after we finish his antibiotics. Which he wasn't.

Something I found to help before I got him to the vet (he started showing signs on a Friday night and my vet was only Mon-Fri) was to give him warm milk. He loved it and it soothed and coated his throat. Gave us about 4 hours of no coughing so we could sleep and gave him some relief. It just sounds awful. The milk didn't bother his belly but I would be careful before giving it to your dog. I did it as a last resort.

Kennel cough is basically like a cold for dogs. Not dangerous in adult dogs unless untreated, and even then it's rare for it to develop into anything dangerous. Usually goes away in 10 days or so. I wouldn't let it run its course without meds though. It's incredibly uncomfortable and sad for the dog. Do things for your dog that you would do for yourself when you're sick to help aid them along. Rest, fluids, vitamin C, etc.

@MrsBrewer: I don't, but he wasn't allowed back to daycare until a week after he was no longer coughing. We have two dogs, and we tried to keep them apart, but didn't do a great job of that. Our other dog never got it.

Has anyone had there dog contract kennel cough? I think our dog has it :-( He has a persistent cough/hacking/gagging..... :-( We are bringing him to the vet tomorrow, but he's never gotten this before. I don't know what to expect I guess. Antibiotics? Will it just run its course?
