I do think it's odd to have your own credit card attached to something in a rental for your own financial security, and a note should be posted somewhere indicating that, but you are ultimately liable. Your best bet is to dispute it with the actual roku app. When my son accidentally bought a movie, I called amazon prime and they refunded it.

If it makes you feel better, $20 is less than you would have had to pay a babysitter to watch them while you packed. DH and I take this mentality when we buy a movie not yet available to rent for a stay at home date night (and probably won’t watch it again) - it’s still less than going out!

I get that it’s frustrating, I’d personally just take it as a reminder that next time I need to take the extra 30 seconds to set up the movie for them. I’ve had to remind my older girls recently that they don’t click “yes” and accept to anything other than the 48-hour viewing period message they get on Prime downloads after I thought my 5-year old made some in-app purchases on an educational game.

@pinkcupcake: I wouldn’t leave a negative review personally either. It was a mistake and as parents we sometimes have to financially pay for the mistakes our children make.

Pay it. Your child purchased it. This would be the case in any other lodging situation (hotel, etc).

I also would not leave a negative review for this. It’s not their fault your child purchased a movie.

I would also pay and move on.

That said, I don’t think it’s unreasonable to suggest they add a password or note about it. Even adding an obvious password (1234) would ensure it’s someone who can read ordering the movie not a toddler. But I don’t have a roku so I have no idea how hard that is to add a password. I know my 5 year old ordered a show on our Comcast account before we added a password.

Eh, agree with others to pay and move on. They probably don't lock it so that people could buy movies if they want, but it might be nice to have a disclaimer somewhere.

I would pay. Like above poster stated, this can happen at a hotel and they will def charge you for it. It was an honest mistake but the host doesn’t know that.

You pay and move on.

This could so easily happen anywhere (hotel, friend’s house, etc). If the child is old enough to have access and understanding to use the Roku unsupervised, but young enough to not be able to read what he’s actually doing, of course there’s a likelihood this could happen. I wouldn’t expect anyone to put a password on a device like that. I’d tell the owners what happened and apologize that you didn’t know. Perhaps that will warrant them to do some sort of password or sign, but I don’t think they’re in the wrong if they chose not to.

I’d pay them the $20. This isn’t even something I would think twice about not reimbursing. Your LO enjoyed the movie. There are times we choose to buy movies instead of renting them through one of our Roku apps because a rental isn’t an option. We typically only watch the movie once.

The owners were probably peeved to see a charge on their CC they didn’t authorize or know was coming. You could leave them a negative review since they want to be reimbursed instead of chalking the $20 up as a cost of doing business.

I don’t even know how to password protect our Roku. DH and I laugh about and quickly confiscate the remote from our kid whenever the tv screen is off (black) and we can hear him clicking the remote- we just know he’s unknowingly clicked something to buy.

I agree with others about offering a piece of advice to the owners they should advise purchases made through Roku are not included in your stay at the same time since you did not see your LO purchase the movie or even know it was still pay-only-to-view I bet you would be in a similar situation where knowledge of the charge was unexpected after your stay.

If it were me I might be annoyed but I’d pay it, and maybe suggest they put up a laminated card or something saying any roku purchases will be the responsibility of the renter. I’m also conflict averse in these situations, but at least you might help out someone else who might be in your shoes, or even want to rent a movie but not know if it was allowed.

Honestly, I would pay it and move on. Yes, they could lock it down, but maybe it’s nice for some people to buy things and reimburse them. Maybe suggest they add that to their listing for the future if it wasn’t there.

If you want, you could bring up your point above and suggest splitting it. I’m conflict averse so I don’t relish those things, but that’s an option. If they say no, I’d just pay.

We were staying at an Airbnb this week and my toddler bought a $20 movie on the host’s roku. We did not realize it at the time and figured that the kids had just found the movie on a subscription that the host already had. After our stay I got a message from the host asking for the $20.

My issue is why in the world would the host not password protect their roku?! On ours you have to put in a password to do anything that costs money. Plus, now they own the movie, we don’t even get to keep it!

I’m just irritated by the whole situation. If you were in this situation would you just pay the $20 or fight them on it since they should have it require a password?

*I also know that it’s ultimately our fault for not supervising the kids better while using the tv but they know how to use a roku remote and we were trying to pack up to leave. I just assumed that they wouldn’t have it so that random Airbnb people could buy stuff using their credit card!
