My 3 year old is in 5T shirts (which is often a size S in big boys) and 4t or 5t pants depending on fit and brant. He has kinda short legs for his hight....

XS I think is 4-5, so that's what I've been buying my 5 year old, who's just starting to outgrow his 4T shirts. For pants though, we're still in toddler sizes (3T), so I haven't had to figure this out yet!

@aprild: I don't think I've ever bought the same size for shirts and pants once we hit 18 months. My oldest (who is 6 years old) wears small (6-8) shirts but depending on the brand/style of shorts can either wear small or medium. If they are the elastic waistband he wears small. If they are button, he wears medium.

Also, depending on where you shop, he might be an XS and not a small. Size 4 is slightly bigger than 4T. Once we moved to the big boy section I actually had to have my son try things on to see what size he wore.

Thanks for the replies! It does make sense when I think about it, but it's something new to get used to

Same. Makes sense to me. DS is in 3ttops and 2t bottoms anyway!

Agreed with above, esp as they get older and diapers don’t help hold up pants. Shirts last us a lot longer and I’m usually buying pants/shorts a size behind anyway.

I think it depends on the shirt and brand. But I think about it like my clothes- many of my shirts are small/medium/ large while my pants are numbered (6, 8, 10...). I just assume pants need to fit more exactly while I’m shirts for the kids I always size up since you can easily wear a top big shirt. Too big pants fall down or you step on them.

I have a question about kid sizing. Up until now, my son was wearing 4T, so I would buy him 4T pants and shirts. I want to buy him clothes in the next size, but I saw the shirts are size S (which is supposed to be for 5-6) and the pants are either size 5 or size 6. Does that mean he would go through two different pant sizes for the same shirt? It seems odd to me they don't pair up like they did with the smaller sizing.
