@LulaBee: :shocked: that's insane!

I've been lucky so far that our insurance has covered the 3 epipens I asked for. They are 100$ each out of pocket but I only had to pay $20.

This thread has been super helpful, thank you to everyone who has replied!!

So I went to get the (generic) Epi-Pen prescription my ped called in and it was OVER $700! My pharmacist found a coupon that he could apply and it ended up being free- but it's just so outrageous. Our first one was covered by insurance but they changed their formulary and isn't covered any more.

Just a heads-up, and I don't know if this is a local thing or not, but my Allergist informed me that CVS no longer carries name-brand Epi-Pens or the Mylan generic and only carries the CVS brand generic.

@LulaBee: @charm54: Just want to let you know that Auvi-Q is another auto-injector that is available. It talks you through the process of administering the epi, and it is currently available at $0 out of pocket cost. Ask your doctor, and he/she will be able to help you get the process started. It was an easy process.

@LulaBee: I know you didn't ask me, but yes! I asked for two sets for both my kids, so our Allergist wrote a prescription for 4 Epi-Pens with 3 refills for both kids, so each kid's class has 2 Epi-Pens, and then I have 4 Epi-Pens at home.

@Charm54: Definitely keep them after the expiration date. They have a window to show you if the fluid is discolored. At one point we had 6, so we lined them all up and could easily tell which ones were significantly discolored, and gave those to the allergist to dispose of properly. I've also heard it is good to use very-expired ones on oranges to get the feel of what it would be like to actually inject someone.

As for carrying them around, do not leave them in your car. They have a narrow temperature range.

@Charm54: It's my understanding that once they expire, they aren't as effective, but will still do the trick. I think my Allergist said you could probably still use them for ten years. Not sure if that's true, but I'll probably keep expired ones for five years before I toss them.

I have a brightly colored fabric bag that I keep a set of epi pens, a change of undies and a pair of shorts. This is A's "go-bag" and we grab it every time we are headed out the door. It usually lives in our backpack that we use when we have both kids, but it's easy to grab and throw in my purse if I just have A. It's nice to have all the things I need for her in a single bag so I don't have to check if I have a change of clothes and her pens and everything.

Thanks everyone. Allergies are new territory for us (no one on either side has allergies to anything) so it's taking some getting used to. The other day I mentioned to Dh that we should visit the nearby honeybee farm with the girls 🤦🏼‍♀️ Omg. He looked at me like I had 10 heads. #Momfail

@Adira: so once they expire, they are still effective? How long will you keep them for? That's good to know - thanks!

@HappyBaker: oh thank you!! Going to go check that out now. I did set up an old cosmetic bag today with the epipen, some fly spray and Benadryl so I'm hoping that will make it easy to get in the habit.

@yin: Yes to this - being able to use more than one EpiPen. We keep a 2-pen set everywhere. Xander's class has a whole set (2 Epi-pens), Logan's class has a set, we have two sets in the diaper bag (so 4 Epi-Pens), I have a set in my purse, and a set in our beach bag (the ones in my purse and beach bag are expired, but I'm glad to have them with me just in case I don't have our diaper bag sets for some reason).

I carry 2 EpiPens with me at all times inside my purse. I also created a first aid kit for my kids, which also includes an additional 2 EpiPens. The first aid kit comes with us when we go on vacation and when we have to drop off the kids for play dates or sleepovers at my in-law's house. In addition we have Epi-Pens at each of their schools, one stored in the nurse's office and the other stored inside the classroom (preschool).

It's also good to know that you can use more than one EpiPen when your child is in anaphylaxis. The EpiPen can wear off and once symptoms come back, you can use a second EpiPen. It's a good reason to carry more than one with you at all times.

We have one at daycare and one that is in my purse on weekdays or diaper bag on the weekends. I'm going to ask for another set at her 18 month checkup this week. It kind of does become routine making sure you have it, and we turn around if we leave the house without it.

You can sign up on the Mylan website for a free carrying case, we put our "travel" epipens in there. We have 3 total sets -1 at daycare, 1 stays home in the medicine cabinet, and 1 is in the carrying case in the front of the diaper bag / tote bag we usually bring with us. It was hard to get in the routine of always checking for it at first if we brought a different bag but now its second nature to check for it / move it to the bag we are using at the time! We keep the diaper bag in the mudroom so it's always on our way out that we check the epi pens are still there / where they need to be. Good luck!

My son is 4 and we are never without his epi pen. We always bring a tote with his name on it and snacks / change of clothes etc and keep in in there full time. On rare occasions that we do a quick errand I move it to my purse and then put it back when I get home & our nanny knows to always check for it in his tote bag before they go anywhere.

Both my kids have EpiPens for severe food allergies.

Daycare has a set for both of them. Then I keep two sets in our diaper bag, which is what I USUALLY take with me when I'm out and about. Now I also have a set in my purse and another set in our beach bag. But I only added those last two when I had to replace the ones at daycare, so I just put the expired ones (that are still effective) in my purse and beach bag.

If you have a bag that you USUALLY have with you for your child, I'd put your EpiPen there. That's our diaper bag for us. I just store them in there. Occasionally I'll take them out and move them to another bag if necessary (when we went on our cruise, they went into my husband's back-pack since we took that on all our excursions).

ETA: I'm sorry you had to get an Epi-Pen. It's scary to have to own one, but you'll get used to it. Hopefully you'll never have to use it! <3

If your LO has an epipen, does it go everywhere with them? Do you carry it in your purse, or another separate bag? Do you have multiple? Does it eventually become a habit to take it everywhere you go?

My DD1 (4yo) recently got an epipen prescription for some pretty severe reactions to insect bites. I'm trying to think about a system I can put in place to make sure I don't forget to leave the house without it (park, beach, etc) or send it with her when she's not with me (play dates, grandma sleepovers).

Any tips or tricks? I did get 2, one for home and one for daycare. Summer is so busy and we are on the go in a million directions, I'm paranoid I wont have it on me if she ever needed it.
