We went to Hilton Head this year. It was her first vacation, besides weekends away, at 18M. We had some sleep issues but otherwise it was great. My Mom came for 4 days and it was a huge help. Another person to go to and from the beach a million times getting buckets of water. Plus we got a date night!

I agree with @lamariniere: that your kids just adapt. We have been on city and beach vacays, near and far: London, Japan, resort in Mexico and SF. We have found fun things to do with her in every place. I think napping and appropriate food are the biggest logistical challenges. We were lucky that LO will nap in the Ergo everywhere we went (because she refuses to nap in the stroller) and we were able to find foods she would eat everywhere we went as well.

I will say this, Japan is very baby friendly. I was surprised that we would so readily find clean change facilities, but they were in most train stations and large department stores.

We went to Cape Cod last month and had a really good time. We rented a house with my family so it was nice to have a place where we could cook and have a real sized fridge. Most days we stayed in until after D's first nap was done, so about 11 or 12, then we'd go out, get lunch, maybe go to the beach for a while, or go somewhere to walk around like Chatham or Provincetown. He does pretty good car naps so a couple of the days we took long car rides exploring while he took his 2nd nap. It was pretty low key, but that's the way I like vacations to be. I'm kind of over the urban destinations where you have to pack a million things into each day. Maybe in a few years we'll be up for those types of trips again.

@illumina: Hesperia in Puerto Calero. We really liked it, except for dinner was a little too sit-down for an almost 2 yr old. It was buffet style, but the atmosphere was trying to be too dressy for a buffet. My DD's table manners became somewhat of a spectacle on some nights. There were guests that came to us that said how much they loved watching her eat. One lady said she could have watched LO eat all night (think spaghetti and a toddler).

We went to mexico and it was great! The Azul Beach resort had nannies so we got nannies after E was asleep and we were able to go out and have wonderful dinners by ourselves! We would go again BUT we would upgrade our room next time. Our room was tiny.

Our other great weekend was renting a condo at the lake. We're definitely doing that next August!

The best vacation we had was Cape Cod. We did make 2 day trips but for the most part we lounged around and went to the beach - no schedules, lots of relaxing, and lots of pj time.

As much as I love going to Myrtle Beach its so busy. We are at the beach, then the pool, then the beach, then we shower, have dinner, do an activity, go to bed. Its just constant busyness!

We've gone to FL twice. Once to Destin and once to Sanibel Island. We loved Sanibel and plan to go back again in March. DS loved the pool and the beach! We rented a two bedroom condo and it was great because we were able to eat a lot of meals in the room, do laundry, and have a quiet space for naps.

we'd definitely do it again! i'm itching to go on a family trip right now because all our vacations have actually been visiting family (mine in ca twice a year, then our big trip to the philippines every summer).

anything with the beach and the kids are happy. i think that's probably more laid back than a city trip where you do a lot of sightseeing. but just living the trip through their eyes makes it worth it!

I would do all of these again: summer in Kauai: princeville, humane society doggy field trip, fern grotto, poipu (hyatt)

NYC: Central Park and Liberty Science Center, children's museum

Fall in SoCal: Anaheim (Disneyland, Califormia Adventure Park, cube science center), Irvine pumpkin patch/railroad, San Diego ( zoo, sea world, tide pools, safari park, balboa) Carlsbad (Legoland)

Seattle: duck tour, space needle, children's museum, science center, northwest trek

Almost more important than Where is When- take into account the season and crowds.

We've been quite a few places with LO. So far Hawaii is my hands-down favorite with LO. We're headed to Florida too. I think anything with warm weather and water-play will be a winner for my LO.

We have been all over with our LOs (Hawaii. Florida, Thailand, many places in Europe). I don't think there is one best kind of vacation. For us, our kids just kind of adapt to where we go, but the main things boil down to preparedness (logistics) and your own expectations. We usually pick one or two things to do per day and not try to jam in tons of activities that way we can just roll with it and squeeze in naps. I would return everywhere with the kids, nothing has been a "never again".

Went to Cologne, Germany this summer with a 2 yr old. It was a vibrant city, but lacked outdoor playgrounds.

Went to Lanzarote in the Canaries and it was very family friendly. There were playgrounds everywhere! LO also enjoyed the beach and we enjoyed the food and quiet atmosphere. LO was 18 months old. The flight is fairly close to us and there's great deals online. We'd definitely go again!

We visited family in Southern California when she was only 7 months old. I'm no longer used to all the driving, but there's a ton of places to go (including the beaches, parks, Legoland, Seaworld, San Diego Zoo, Children's Museum). Although we only visited the beaches, parks, and an aquarium, she had a lot of fun. I'm looking forward to taking her to Disneyland in a few years.

We went to the Bahamas and stayed at Atlantis. We hung out at the beach, pool and "swam" with dolphins. It was great.

Did Orlando with the kids and went to Disneyworld. Stayed at the Gaylord Palms and had a great time.

Visited family in CA. The time difference was rough, but the kids did well and it was worth the trip to see everyone.

Went to hilton head island and stayed at the Disney resort. LOVED it. Will definitely go again next year.
