I think it just depends on the movie and why it's rated that. I don't think I would have any problem taking a six year old to see the new Star Wars.

For me it's more about content - why does it get that rating? language? violence? mature setting?

My son's favorite movie since before he turned 2 is Happy Gilmore and I'm fine with it. He loves golf and hockey and thinks Adam Sandler is hilarious. Sure there are curse words, a fight and some adult things but it's totally over his head. And the lesson he takes from that movie is learning to control your temper.

I don't love him watching Ninja Turtles or Power Rangers because it's nothing but non-stop fighting. I wouldn't let him watch something with lots of weapons and fighting, even if it was rated G.

I was going to ask this too. My DH has wanted to show her some PG movies at age 4. I'm not ok with that because there is obviously jokes and actions that are inappropriate.

@yoursilverlining: Agreed. Just to add to that, it REALLY depends on the kid too. Is your child mature enough and understanding of these types of fictions? Situations? Adult issues? If so, then they are probably ok. If not, and their behaviour or language or whatever is affected by this then maybe it's not for them.

I have a really hard time with this stuff. I'm pretty against censorship, but I am FULLY 100% on board with age appropriateness.

My two step kids (8 & 11) have been allowed to watch, literally, anything they want. I'm pretty sure they have no censorship at all at their home. If they turned the walking dead on their mother wouldn't even know they were watching TV. Seriously.

In my opinion, it has affected their behaviour. They have been exposed to violence at an age that they couldn't comprehend it. So, they tend to be violent towards each other and their parents. It's become a problem. Don't get me wrong, there are MANY other issues they deal with that have added to their behavioural problems, but this is something that could have easily been avoided.

I'm pretty conservative about this kind of stuff too. I'd rather limit what my kids can watch than have them exposed to mature content too early.

@brownie: We did the original trilogy, too. ;) I don't care for the newer ones as much, which is why we haven't seen those as a family, but Star Wars is, in my view, one of the better series for children to see because it follows a very classical story line and it does so exceedingly well.

As for ratings, I don't pay attention to them on their own. If I'm in doubt because I haven't seen the film, I either preview it or check out Common Sense Media. For now, it's mostly a non-issue, because we typically select films for movie night that my husband and I have already seen, so we know what we're getting into.

Hmmm I was planning to take my 4.5 year old to see the new Star Wars. But he's only seen (and obsessed) with the original trilogy. Looks like I need to find the new ones to try.... (I gave up after 2 and never saw episode 3).

As for labeling it's all so arbitrary. We will probably just base it on theme and as much content as we can. He watches Star Wars but I haven't let him watch any of the new super hero or transformers. They just seem over the top violent.

I wasn't allowed to see PG-13 movies until I was 15. DH watched everything from an early age. I think we're going to have trouble coming up with the right guidelines for our family. Somewhere in the middle but not sure where.

My parents were very liberal with us when it came to movies and it was more so if they wanted to see something they didn't exclude us. Whereas, a friend of mine's parents watched ALL of the movies before she did to determine if it was appropriate. We'll probably be somewhere in the middle. I can envision alot of action superhero or sci-fi movies that we will see as a family that may not have the appropriate rating for the child's age.

My niece and nephew are 12 and we don't think PG-13 movies these days are appropriate for them. When they're under our care, recent pg-13 movies aren't allowed. heck, I don't even let my niece watch the mindless crap on Disney channel geared towards pre-teens. She watches the at home but my house, my rules. :P

I'm with @coopsmama. I would prefer to wait until my kids are closer to 13 for PG-13 movies.

ETA: My DD is 4.5 and I prefer that she not watch PG movies.

My parents' rule was that before 13 we could only see a pg13 film if they saw it first and decided it was ok. I didn't see many before I was s teenager, and I'm ok with that! I'll probably do the same with my kids. Movies can really stick with you, so I think it's one area I prefer to censor.

I think it would depend on the movie and my kid. My siblings and I were watching Star Wars when we were younger than 6. But there are plenty of PG-13 movies I wouldn't want a kid to see.

I think it depends a lot on why the rating is what it is. Some "mature subject matter" is fine for some kids, but I wouldn't be down with tons of violence, explicit/suggestive sex scenes and tons of swearing for a movie my kid saw.

I think it's best to err on the side of conservative when it comes to movies. Little kids are SO impressionable.

I personally would not let my six year old see a Pg-13 movie. Maybe a mature 10 year old if I were there and knew why the movie had garnered the rating.

My good friend is taking his 6-year-old son to see The Force Awakens on opening night. The movie will probably have a PG-13 rating, but he's not concerned because his son has already seen all six movies in the Star Wars series so far (5 out of 6 of them were PG, but episode 3 was PG-13).

It got me thinking about when it's age appropriate to watch PG and PG-13 movies. I'm pretty conservative about this stuff, but maybe I'm too old-school. What do you think?
