Honestly, this is one of the reasons we personally choose to limit ourselves to two (and maybe just our current one). We don't at all feel this is the decision everyone should make and it is by no means our only reason, but it is still important to us.

my much, much greater concern than two years of diapers in a landfill is with populating the earth with good people who give a shit about each other. your friend can be as environmentally conscious as she wants, but if she doesn't procreate then she's leaving it up to the next guy who did to inform the future of the earth.

I think you can look at it two ways:
Cost of raising a kid
Cost of another person on earth

Having multiples actually really cuts down on the cost of a raising a kid. People who only have one or two just don't use things for that long and may have extra money to spend on cool gadgets a multi-kid family never would buy.

I do not think putting another person on earth is a cost to the environment if you raise them right. If your kid only eats with plastic/paper one-use items, yes, that will be a drain on the environment, but if they are mindful and recycle or go for reusable items I think that is a win.

I saw a graphic not to long ago showing different activities and how each impacts the environment. It had having an additional child as an item and it was an extremely high impact compared to any other item. Like off the charts high.

I’ve read things like that but I don’t totally buy it. I think a lot depends on how you are raising them- I do feel sort of terrible about the number of disposable diapers and pouches and single serve packs of billions of snacks, that are all in landfills because of my two kids. But certainly there are parents with more than two kids who do a much better job than me of being environmentally responsible. And yeah people are having fewer kids than ever so, I don’t know.

I mean, I think there are a ton of things we do that are bad for the environment and it’s pretty hard to know how to weigh them all. The birth rate in the US is below replacement rate at the moment I believe so on the other hand you can also tell yourself having more is helping support things like social safety nets when we get older :silly:

If it helps you to think about it that way go for it! I know it can be really hard when you and your partner aren’t agreed on the number ... I’ve been there.

Do you think having more than one or two kids is bad for the environment? I wish to have another but my husband isn’t on board and I was talking to my friend about. She said that having more kids is really bad for the environment anyway to help me feel better about it. I guess there are some articles aboubit. I can see where that’s true but there are a lot of people who don’t have any kids nowadays by choice, so maybe it evens out.
