Thanks for all the suggestions.

I didn’t even think of fleece lined leggings. We have one but gets hardly worn so def it’s something I can stock up on now.

I think it’s mostly 30’s at night and 40’s during the day. We’ll be there for the month of December and the beginning of December is fairly nice whereas the end can get icy frost in mornings or be just as nice depending. Mostly we will be in the city where wind is main concern but there are chances we will go out into farm country to see grandparents and it can get a little colder.

I would definitely get some waterproof gear... especially shoes/books or hiking boots/whatever... Maybe jsut some lightweight rainpants too to keep under layers dry? WOOL SOCKS!

@misolee: if average is 40, does that means some days are 30s? And are you going to be riding around in a car, or outside for hours? 49 feels so different from 32, you know? 49 feels downright balmy in the winter and 30-32 is cold to me.

If it’s in the higher 30s and we are going to be outside for a long time, we layer regular leggings under fleece leggings (from target or old navy). Colder than 32 and we’ll probably put in snow pants to be outside for a long time. But just getting in and out of cars, my kids would wear regular pants and just slide on a coat.

Same with the rest of the gear—we only do hats and gaitors and real gloves if we are planning to be outside a long time; otherwise we just do a winter coat which has a hood and the little knit gloves.

I think you'd be fine with a mid-weight jacket and some light mittens and hat. We are in Minnesota though, so 40s seems mild to me.

If it's in the 40s, I think fleece-lined pants will be plenty, especially if you're not planning to spend lots of time outside at once (like going on a hike or something). Same for boots versus regular shoes - maybe just warmer socks like wool socks? I think your kids will just need hats and mittens/gloves and be all set. It might depend on your kids though. My son runs hot, so if it's in the 40s he mostly needs a warmer coat and gloves if we're going to be outside for awhile.

I like fleece-lined pants as a warmer option vs. long johns or layers. We are in the South too and when we vacationed up north last December these were a lifesaver. They felt like the kids usual pants and were a single layer, but nice and warm.

Piggy backing Ms. Carrot’s question but I’m from the South and we are going internationally for the month of December to somewhere colder than what we are used to. Less snow and rain but more cold and windy. Average temps are like 40s. We won’t be walking too much bc we are renting a car but will still be outdoors occasionally.

What do I need fo kids besides heavy jacket? Do they need boots? Or can we do with regular tennis shoes. I have jackets, hats, mittens. Do I need like long Johns for them? Where do we even get kids long Johns?
