I really like the Hemnes line at Ikea because the base structure of their furniture is real wood vs other lines where it's all particle/mdf wood. For the price diff, I'd go with Ikea since they won't use it forever. I'd invest the difference in a nicer big kid bed/room when they'll be using the bed long term.

@looch: yeah I know what you mean and we have "furniture store" stuff in our room/common areas, but just weren't ready to make the investment for kids stuff. even with a great furniture place near us (furniture land south if anyone is ever shipping for real nice stuff at a discount...) it was going to be 2-3x PB prices and we just thought it was too crazy for kids pieces (for our budget).

Thanks everyone we decided to go with IKEA (I think) since it seems to last okay and we aren't sure how long we'll keep it (we want a twin for floor space, but also think of bigger for long term/guests, or possibly bunks if we end up in a smaller house later [military]). So based on our indecision seems like the way to go so if we want to switch in a few years it's not as big of a deal.

We have had great experiences with our ikea furniture. Our bedrood set is the malm kind and even held up great in our move! I would definitely lean towards ikea for kids stuff!

For kids, IKEA. I would be devastated if I spent a ton on expensive furniture for my kids and they ruined it. Seeing how they treat most of our furniture, I wont buy them expensive stuff until their teens.

@Mrs. Bee: agree with moving! We have a few things from Ikea, mostly dressers and a wardrobe. The wardrobe barely survived our move and the doors are all wonky now. One of our dressers seems to be of pretty good quality and very solid, but the other two are meh.

PBK has good resale value. If you can afford the upfront cost, I'd go that route. You will probably be able to get at least 50% back when you resell, maybe even 75%. In the end, you could pay less for PBK and have nice furniture. That being said, we don't usually have the available cash for a bunch of expensive furniture, so we usually get used solid wood furniture from Craigslist and refinish/repaint it or buy from Ikea. We do have a PBK bookshelf we bought during a great sale and I've seen the same one sold on local boards for more than we paid.

We like the Hemnes line. We have two dressers and two nightstand from it. I would not bother with pricier furniture for a kid's room.

I am really pleased with our IKEA furniture we bought for DDs room. We don't have a pottery barn anywhere near (and shipping in Canada is $$$ not to mention the original price!!) so it was never an option. But the local furniture store's sets were all super $$$$ also and way crappier quality. I will definitely buy IKEA again for this LO when we transition to a big room!

@Smurfette: exactly. I don't really see ANY set lasting 18 years through the destruction of a child! Besides which, they don't make furniture like they used to so PBK or IKEA, I don't expect either to last 18 years.
And really, not all IKEA pieces are created equal. Some of them we straight junk and some are surprisingly nice. Especially for the price!

I have had a hemnes queen bed and dresser since college (9 years) and its in great shape. Granted it gets used rarely know since its in our guest room but I have found it to be very sturdy for the price. The mattress has held up well, too. I lived how easy the bed was to put together since I moved quite a bit.

@Smurfette: Yep.... I can remember being a tween and spilling nail polish on my bff's beautiful dark-stain solid wood dresser. We decided to "fix" it by rubbing the top of the dresser down with nail polish remover - hahaha we totally screwed up the dresser and her mom went nuts. Adults can handle investment pieces - I think it's usually a waste on little kids.

We are planning on getting LO an IKEA dresser and nightstand when we move her into her big girl room. We figured the odds are markers, paint, nail polish, etc are going to get on it. So when she is 10/13, somewhere around there, she will get a nice set for a bday present.

Most ikea stuff is not going to last too long, but the Hemnes line is a lot better. It's solid wood and feels really sturdy. I have the long dresser in my room, have had it a little over two years and it looks and feels like new (ahem, except for the dust).

That said, I would be surprised if it lasts until college, so if you are looking at buying for the long haul PBK in sure is better quality.

For us, I know we are moving in the next few years and don't know what furniture will fit in what room, so it doesn't make sense to invest in too much really good stuff right now.

We've had a pbkids crib, dresser, bookcase and twin bed for my son. We considered ikea for his twin bed but decided to spend the money up front on something that will likely last him until he goes to college! We certainly have stuff from Ikea too but for major pieces of furniture I prefer to go with the solid high quality long lasting stuff.

We are thinking about a new bedroom set for our daughter and I'm interested in two sets, one from PB kids (Catalina) and one from Ikea (hemnes).

For the set, with a bed/dresser/nightstand, and Labor Day sales...from PB it's just over $1K and IKEA is just over $400.

My husband is worried the ikea will fall apart really quickly. Does anyone have kids stuff from either of these brands can speak to their quality/longevity?
