@yoursilverlining: @Smurfette: Agree about a little tub in the big tub!

We've used a little Ikea tub in the regular bathtub with both kids and they love it. I love it because it wastes so much less water!

If he doesn't like the bathtub but liked baths in a sink, you can try bathing him in the tub in a Rubbermaid type basket thing. My LO didn't do well for the transition from infant bather to tub, but was happy as a clam sitting in one of those tubs, in the tub. Might make the transition easier for him.

Do you think some calm music would help at night? Maybe a night light? Have you tried massage - with some lavender lotion?

I'm sure he will settle into a routine soon!

I think you may have also mentioned that he has some sensory issues? If so it's quite possible that that could also make him new sensitive and take even longer than most to get into better sleep patterns.

Sending lots of  I hope he gets some sleep soon.

@hotchildinthecity: regarding baths, have you tried bathing him in the big tub but using the shower instead? My LO hated baths in the big tub for awhile so I just ran the shower and she liked it a lot better. Now we do regular baths and it's no big deal.

@Trailmix: oh I totally agree. I think he is just "over-" everything -- stimulated, tired, etc. And we're learning random things...like we were told he loves a bath....I think maybe he loved baths in the sink...he does NOT love the bathtub! And I know his little body is catching up to his newfound hunger...he's definitely drinking more bottles than they said he was!

Sorry you're going through this, I imagine it's probably more related to the fact that his entire world has been turned upside down rather than jet lag (although that is probably not helping anything). He will sleep eventually and you sound like you have a great, positive attitude for someone who hasn't slept much for several days, but I think for now you're just going to have to wait it out. Good luck!

@T.H.O.U.: he's literally only sleeping for 1.5 hour bursts at night, not just for napping. And we are doing lavender Bath before bed. Unfortunately he does not really like the bath so I don't think its a relaxing time for him.

@winniebee he sleeps in a crib. He did that at his foster parents' and slept there very well in the hotel in Seoul.

@Mrs. Jacks: he's slept in a crib at his foster parents' and has no interest in sleeping with us. We do lie down in his room with him until he falls asleep. In regards to his eating and development, I'm waiting on my early intervention appointment and he goes to his initial ped appointment on Wednesday. I know we have a long road ahead with his developmental, speech and feeding issues. However, he has already changed so much from when we met him. He is such a ball of energy, when we originally thought he seemed fairly lethargic.

@applesandbananas I totally agree that he's overstimulated and we need to calm things down. He lived a very quiet and calm life with his foster parents and we provide him with a lot more stimulation. His brain and body must be totally overwhelmed.

I've never tried Benadryl, so I can't speak to that. If lots of sunshine and being out and about aren't seeming to help, maybe he's overstimulated and overtired? My LO is 20m and when there's a lot going on, he won't sleep and seems to have endless energy and eventually crashes and burns, sometimes 3-4 days later (currently dealing with this burnout from the holiday). For my LO, quieter activities, lots of reading in our laps, snuggling, and warm lavender baths are what gets him back on track.

I bet your LO is super excited and wanting to soak it all in and that's making it hard to sleep! Have you started a bedtime routine? A warm lavender bath, some snuggling and books, and white noise might help! My LO, as wound up as he gets, finds it hard to fight the powers of white noise after a warm bath!

Have you tried co-sleeping with him? I'd imagine this is a very tough adjustment in so many ways! Some attachment parenting might be really beneficial both in the short term and the long run.

Also with his feeding issues, I'm sure you will be working with some specialists soon. Do you have any pediatricians in your area that specialize in adoption medicine? There are a couple at University of Washington if you need a distance consult with them. I had an informal consult with them when matching with our younger daughter. (They are friends and I used to work in that clinic)

There are also developmental pediatrician a who can help with assessment and therapies. Finally, at some large pediatric referral centers (I don't know where you are), there is something called "Feeding and Nutrition Clinic" where they help assess feeding problems and provide therapies in order to avoid life long feeding aversions.

You are going to be so surprised and amazed at how fast your little guy grows and develops!

We've traveled overseas (East Coast to Asia and back) multiple times and what helps is trying to keep the same daily routine, especially during bed time. Kids are so routine driven and it helps with their internal clock when they are doing the same thing at the same time as before. Although, we've been lucky in that we always arrive either late afternoon or dinner time so the first thing we do when we get home is shower and go to bed. They wake up early but it usually gets better on day 4. I also recommend staying out during the daytime and getting lots of sunshine to help his body adjust to the time zone. It's tough and may take quite a few days but he will get there. Also, have you tried putting some rice cereal in his bottles to help him stay full longer? I would try benadryl during the daytime first before you try it at night b/c he could react the opposite rather than feel sleepy. My boys' pediatrician warned me that it could have an opposite effect when I asked about using it on the plane the first time I flew with my oldest. Hope you all get some sleep soon!

If he's napping for one hour instead of 1.5 hours I wouldn't be worried about the naps. For night it might just be tough getting into a routine but personally I don't think I would do Benadryl. Doesn't zarbees make a natural sleep aid for kids? Also what about a lavender bath?

Jet lag is tough. It always took C at least a week when we came to and from the UK (6 hour difference). We used melatonin to help regulate her cycle the final time, which seemed to help a bit. But yeah, definitely bright light and keep him active during the day and then keep things dim and calm and quiet at night.

How long have you been back for? When we've traveled far, I've definitely noticed that it takes my son 1 day for every time zone, sometimes even more, depending on the season (winter is longer since it is so dark!).

He's got a lot going on right now, so I think the excitement and adjustment to his new life must also be really rough. Have you looked Mrs. Paintbrush's blog series? Both of her sons were adopted from Korea, most recently her youngest earlier this year. Maybe try to get in touch with her for tips?

@hotchildinthecity: Jet lag can be so hard on the kids! We've done the time zone shift a few times after visiting my family in the Philippines, and it's brutal.

Eventually we figured out that there are a few keys to regulating someone's circadian rhythm... basically it comes down to getting bright light very early in the morning (within 30 minutes or so of waking up) and then avoiding bright light in the afternoon/evening. Phones/tablets/computers/TVs can be an inadvertent source of bright light in the evenings, which was a big revelation to us because sometimes we would give the kids a video if they were up late. Oops!

Oh also, does he sleep in the stroller if you push him around? When our son wouldn't sleep, I'd stroller him over to the bumpiest street I could find and just go back and forth over that until he passed out!

GOOD LUCK!!

Yes to the benadryl. We are dealing with an overtired lo over here and that was the pediatricians suggestion. The dosage we were told is 1 tsp for overnight and 1/2 tsp for naps. It is helping him fall asleep faster and sleep more soundly. He said we could do that for up to 2 week but I hope that won't be necessary.

I hope you guys get some rest soon!

My LO is suffering from bad jet lag after our flight back from Seoul. He is crying a lot, but can't be soothed and he just refuses to sleep. Yesterday he took a couple one hour naps and last night slept for a grand total of 3 hours. The day before was the same. When we were in Seoul, he slept for 10 hours at night and a 1.5 hour nap.

I'm just getting worried because it just seems like he HAS to sleep. We're trying to regulate his schedule, but whenever we put him to bed, he just wakes up 1.5 hours later. The longest stretch he's slept for is three hours.

As a little background, he's 2 but he eats no solid food or pouches. He will gag if you try to feed him anything. He was on about 4 bottles a day in Seoul but he seems so hungry (and his activity level has increased) so we typically give him about 6 bottles.

We're going to make sure and get him out in lots of sunshine today and my husband has suggested we maybe give him Benadryl to sleep tonight. Any thoughts?
