@Foodnerd81: I don't know if you need to have an X1 DVR to make it work, but that's what I have. My Fire has the Xfinity Stream app and you can download your DVR'd shows to watch offline!

@Adira: you can download shows from xfinity to kindle?! How!?? This could be a complete game changer.

I find the kindle annoying and found it really hard to figure out what was available offline through the free time. Once I canceled that t was easier to see what we had. Mostly we have a couple of episodes we have purchased, and I download Netflix shows or movies before a trip. I can’t remember how i did it but I did make it so she can watch Netflix in the kids view.

But seriously watching xfinity dvr-ed shows offline on the kindle would be amazing.

@lindseykaye: You can log in on the parent profile and "share content" with the children's profiles. Then they will be available.

@HappyBaker: I've considered going Kindle so many times but we've been just fine with the iPads, but I think I might really pull the trigger this black friday!

And FWIW, when the girls use the iPads in our car, they now know what works and what doesn't and know that they can only watch from the downloaded section on Netflix and Amazon. And yes, for both I always check to make sure the downloads are "refreshed" and the viewing periods not expired. They are also annoying that I usually have to rotate new downloaded contents since I don't have that much space.

We have a Kindle Fire with Freetime and we use ours in the car all the time for long trips.

To echo what a lot have said - apps/games can be access on the kid profile as long as she's played them recently and they're 'downloaded'. I believe there's a way to see what's currently downloaded so that you can remove items to make space, but I'd have to poke around to find it.

You can also download Prime content/videos or Netflix, but yes these are only accessible through a main/non-kid profile. It's not an issue for us since we just turn it on for her but it is annoying sometimes. Same for other game/app downloads that don't show up in the kid profile version - you can get them from Amazon but you can't access them except on the adult profile. So maybe there's a way around it but it's a minor annoyance so far.
Our 'FreeTime' included with our purchase ran out and it's only $2.99/month now which is fine for me since most of the games and apps she loves are more pricey than that, especially the good educational ones.

@gotkimchi: Oh, maybe it's a Netflix thing. I think we've only accessed it through the main profile too. Thanks!

@Adira: we also only access downloaded Netflix stuff through the main profile so idk if that’s how you have to do it or if that’s just how my husband set them up? But it works fine

@HappyBaker: you can access shows for 48h offline - so it will say would you like to start your 48h viewing period? And you just say yes. We have them for both my kids and just download apps and shows before we go. One thing you might consider is my husband put sd cards in them so we can have more downloaded content. and they have a great warranty (we replaced one twice).

@HappyBaker: haha, that's ALL I know how to do with it! We own a bunch of Paw Patrol seasons, so I just download a bunch of episodes and add the season to the kids' profile and they are good to go!

The biggest thing to remember is that sometimes you have to refresh your downloads. Actually, that reminds me, I DO think you can download prime things, but you can only watch them for 48 hours or something, so those are the ones that you have to really remember to refresh when you're connected to wifi. Before a trip, I always go through and refresh all the downloads, disable the wifi to double-check they are working, and then they are good to go!

I can't remember offhand how the Netflix downloads work - I think I've had trouble with the Netflix app opening in the kids' profiles, but when that happens, we just switch to the main profile, open Netflix, go to the downloaded content, and let the kids have at it.

@Adira: Oh awesome I didn't even think you could download other content that you own, we own a TON of Disney Movies on Amazon so that would be great! Thank you!

So I can't fully answer your questions because I don't have the Freetime Unlimited stuff, but I do have the Kids Kindle and do really like them.

I've downloaded videos we own (not sure if you can download prime videos or not), as well as videos in Netflix. You can add videos and apps to the kids' profiles (and each kid can have a separate profile). We always use them in the car, so no wifi, and the kids will watch the shows we've downloaded (either through Amazon video or through Netflix) or play games (Angry Birds). Oh! I've also downloaded videos that are on our DVR through the Xfinity App, but you can only download to one device at a time, so they can't both watch the same thing, though they often don't care.

I've really liked them, but I can't speak to the FreeTime stuff at all.

My big kids are 6 and 3.5 and currently each have LeapPad's, which have made our 7 hour bi-monthly trips to my in-laws bearable for the past few years that we have had them! Now that they are getting older though they get bored with the content on the LeapPad's quicker, and it gets expensive to download new shows or buy new games. I'm looking into getting them Kids Kindle Fire's for our next trip - but I can't seem to find conclusively if you CAN use Freetime content without wifi.

If you have a Kid's Kindle and Freetime Unlimited, would you recommend it? Can you use it with absolutely NO wifi connection aka in the car? Is it frustrating to the kids that only some things work offline? I've read conflicting reports that say only the available offline content will show up and others say the whole library shows up but just doesn't work when you are offline. Do you have to log on the night before your trip and download whatever content you want them to use offline? (I do this now anyway with their LeapPad's.) Thanks in advance!
