My son was waking up even earlier than normal (also in the 5:30 range) after starting preschool. I think it's common for major life changes to disrupt kids' sleep. I've never had luck with moving bedtime up leading to more sleep, but obviously it works for some people (jealous!) As he's started adjusting to preschool, he's gotten a bit better about sleep (punctuated by the constant colds/viruses that seem to be back in full force, ugh...) Hoping it will be a short-lived phase for you...

@meadow: My oldest just started Kindergarten too! She has been exhausted every day and we actually moved her bedtime up a bit. I know when my kids are overtired, they tend to wake up earlier. No idea why it's like that, but that has always been the case. I think it's possible your kids are waking early because they're overtired. Maybe try moving up bedtime a bit?

@bhbee: I do think one child wakes up & starts chatting then the other wakes. But they've room shared their whole lives, so nothing new there. The 2nd child awake is not upset/cranky.

@bhbee: @Cait1: you're right, it cool still be the newness & that excitement.

🤞🤞 return to normal sleep

@bhbee: I'll try to bump bedtime up this wwek.

My 5 year old just started kindergarten and has definitely been waking up earlier than usual. So far, I’ve chalked it up to nerves about all the change - seems like he wakes up, remembers he has school, and can’t settle back down. He’s not particularly anxious about school and enjoys his new class but I think the newness of it still hasn’t worn off. Good luck with your kiddos, I’m hoping we get back to the usual wake up time soon too. 😬

I agree does not seem like going down to 10 hours makes sense! Can you tell if one is waking the other?

You might try doing bedtime earlier - sometimes being overtired/overstimulated can mess up sleep and cause early wakings. My oldest went to bed at 7pm to get up at 6:30am during the start of kindergarten and eventually went back to 11 hours.

Do they seem anxious about anything related to school? That could be another possibility. My current 1st grader woke up early the first week or so, I think because his mind was turning on everything new.

DD and DS are 5yo and started kindergarten a month ago. They were home with me in the summer and slept 7:30 - 6:20 nearly every day. Since starting school, their bedtime is the same, but they are often waking up at 5:30. Unlike spring time, its not like its light outside earlier or anything - haha.

Does it make sense that their sleep needs would be lower after starting school?? I figured they would be more exhausted from having to be "good" all day and with all of the learning they are doing....

They are in a half day public school program and bus to a montessori school for the afternoon. At the montessori school they seem to spend a lot of time of the playground - so they are certainly getting gross motor / running around time....

Has anyone else experienced less sleep once starting school?

(ETA - the goal was for them to keep waking up at 6:20 --- it isn't that we are waking them up early or anything :-p)
