@bhbee: What if you taught her to wash both the front/top, rinse that out, and then flip her head over and wash the underside the same way. I know it uses more shampoo, but I had trouble with this as a kid and this solved it. For me the issue was that my hair was so thick that I couldn't get the soap to the underside by just putting it on the top. Either way, it might help you feel like it's getting clean.

Thank you ladies!

@Chuckles: hand mirror is a great idea!

@poppygirl15: It’s hard to be sure, but I tend to think rinsing is not the main issue because when I help; I suds up a ton but let her rinse and it turns out fine. Very interesting about the water! I’m going to look into clarifying shampoo for sure.

@catgirl: so true about breaking the cycle. I have never heard of a shower comb, but going to check it out!

Maybe lathering and then running a brush or comb through her hair while she rinses would help.

If it's a problem with rinsing you could try a shower comb or a scalp brush to help distribute product and aid with rinsing.

And I second using a clarifying shampoo once a week or so. Once hair looks a little greasy it can be heard to break the cycle, the clarifying shampoo can help give a clean slate and prevent build up.

Her hair sounds like mine - a lot of fine hair. My hair used to get greasy so quickly. I would wash it in the morning and it would look dirty by that night. This happened until my late 20s and now I can finally wash my hair every other day, though can't go longer than that without washing it.

To me it sounds like she isn't rinsing the back of her hair enough. I used to do this too as a kid. If I left any shampoo in my hair by mistake it looked greasy as soon as my hair dried.

My only suggestion is to tell her to use her fingernails to scrub her hair as she's rinsing the shampoo and conditioner out. This will help to get rid of any buildup and hopefully keep it from happening again!

I agree with everyone else to see if you can watch her do it/make sure she's rinsing properly. If she is, then I wonder if it's your water. We have really hard water in our apartment and the mineral deposits was making our hair feel so gross - dirty as soon as we washed it! My stylist recommended using a clarifying shampoo once a week (Bumble & Bumble Sunday Shampoo) and we got a Culligan's water softener shower head that has a built in filter. If she has finer hair than the rest of your family, something like this might be more apparent on her than the rest of you. When I switched my daughter to a gentle swim shampoo (Triswim), her hair changed almost overnight. We use it year-round. GL!

If you think the problem might be that she's not rinsing the shampoo out well enough, I remember my mom telling me when I was a kid that my hair would feel "squeaky" once the soap was rinsed out

Maybe practice in the mirror with a hand mirror, too, so that she can see the back of her head - either in or out of the shower? I think it would be important for her to be able to see that the back of her head isn't sudsy and exactly where she should be reaching to.

Could you let her watch how you do it? Maybe wearing a bathing suit if she'd be more comfortable that way? I also wonder if the problem is that she isn't washing it well or maybe she isn't rinsing it well.

I feel pretty silly saying this, but I can't seem to teach my oldest to wash her hair properly on her own! She just turned 9 so definitely old enough. She's always been kind of a hormonal kid - needed deodorant early, hair gets greasy pretty easily, etc - and I assume it'll get worse. She has a lot of fine hair so easy to look greasy too.

She gets the front washed ok thankfully, but just looking at her hair this morning (after a shower last evening) and the back looks greasy. I help her do it every now and then to fight this but I know she doesn't want help.

What tips can I give her? So far I've suggested getting it really wet, working up a lather in the front and working that to the back, taking a lot of time, making sure everything feels soapy.

Maybe there is some trick of how to explain?? Any help appreciated!
