@Jess1483: @mrslibrarian: @PurplePeony: Thanks for the commiseration, everyone! It helps to know that it isn't just him :)

@Nonimouse: We also try our best to just walk away. I always say, "I'm happy to talk to you when you are done on the toilet." And then try to ignore all his whining. I need to make sure DH is totally on board with this.
@KT326: That's the most frustrating part, I think. That he takes forever and then is mad when we've run out of time for extra books before bed or something like that. I keep telling him, "this is your choice."
@meganmp: Thanks! I'll take a look at this. It might be good for a couple of my special ed students too.

One thing I've been working on with my students is time awareness, and I recently came across a woman named Sarah Ward. She gave an AMAZING professional development near me regarding executive function skills and students, and I wonder if some of this would work for your son. She talked about using a clock and a dry erase marker so kids are aware of the time that they are using- it's hard for me to type this out, so here's a link with more detail. I highly recommend watching any of her videos regarding helping kids understand time- the tiny tweaks she's given me have already changed how my classroom functions!

My almost-6 yo takes forever, too, and always asks if I can come in the bathroom with her so she’s not lonely! (Answer: no. We’re trying to reinforce bathroom privacy, which is a whole other issue 🙄). I usually just let her be, but sometimes she poops in the morning before school and I have to hurry her along. Fortunately, she REALLY doesn’t want to be late for school so she reluctantly cuts it short, and I told her that if she feels like she needs to go more when she gets to school, she can always use the potty there. But for the other times...I got nothing.

No advice but my 7.5 year old takes forever too! Then gets mad when he doesn’t have enough time to do something.

So much solidarity. My 6 yo can take 30-45 minutes sometimes. It’s killer. I have no solution.

Lots of sympathy! my 5yo is the same. What I do is to lay out his toilet paper (4 2-square pieces) and then leave. I won't talk to him until he's done and has wiped (if he isn't clean after 4 wipes, I help him finish). it's not a perfect solution, but it helps a little and I get less frustrated.

My first grader is a slow poke in general (he takes after his dad  ). He *can* do things quickly when he's really motivated, but even when there are consequences like missing playtime, sometimes he takes forever to do things anyways. It can be anything from getting dressed to getting out of the car to eating.

But the biggest problem we have is that he usually takes *forever* to poop. Not the actual bowel movement part. But the wanting to chat while he's on the toilet, singing to himself, staring into space, whatever. And if I try to hurry him, he just claims that he's not done. And then the wiping can be the same way. Tonight he sat on the toilet for 20 minutes while we kept asking him to hurry up and be done. It's a problem when it's getting late at bedtime or we're trying to get somewhere. It's also a problem because (gross, I know) the poop dries out and then he needs to use wet wipes to clean up effectively.
Anyone else had this issue? Ideas of what to do? He hates timers and they usually backfire because he gets so worked up about them. And he'll get mad about a natural consequence (like having to wipe with wipes or missing playtime or not enough time for all the stories at bedtime), but it's not always enough to get him to move more quickly. Help!
