Our 3 and 5 year olds each got one for Christmas and really haven't used them much (but we also don't have the unlimited subscription). A lot of the 'free' games can be a pain with pop ups and locked areas, but now that they're both stuck at home all day they've really been coming in handy, and I like that DS can watch school and learning videos.

The library does have a free online lending thing, I just haven't gotten the kindles set up with it yet.

Our library uses the libby app and has lots of picture books. Plenty with narration. Maybe see if that's an option on your existing devices.

We've had them for 2 years now and really like them. I like the yearly subscription that tailors the content to your child's age and interests based on what they view.

@mrsbubbletea: we have them for our kiddos and have been really happy with them. you get a year free of the kids subscription. our year is almost up so at that point we may just purchase a few things they really like rather than keep the monthly fee. my kids have been enjoying books (some that even read to you), games, etc. they don't have access to our ipad or phones or anything so it's their only device. i like that you can set limits on it.

Thinking of getting one for my 5 yo. We need more home activities and I think there is some unlimited subscription? Not too interested in games or apps, we already have a switch and an iPad. Or is there an iPad app that would work? Our iPad is kind of old and low on space so we always have to delete and re add apps. Mainly interested in reading lots of books, together and ones he can look through picture or even audio?
