I would not be comfortable and would definitely bring it up. It's both a boundary and a germ issue for me.

The other day I saw my son's teacher give him a kiss (not on the mouth). It didn't bother me at all. I was happy to know she loved my son. After all, she is with these kids all day every day. They've also told me my son is very affectionate and runs up to give them hugs all day.

It probably would bother me if it made my child uncomfortable. If not, then I'm ok with it.

My older son's PreK teacher also would give him hugs and told him she loved him. That didn't bother me either.

@turquoisemama: this may be a cultural thing. I live in the south and have worked in centers and am certain I have probably kissed babies on the head. Definitely not the lips. I would have totally understood though if it was weird to a parent and would have respected their wishes.

As a parent what you described wouldn't bother me at all, as long as the child was comfortable.

I’d kindly say due to the germs and sick season overall I prefer you not kiss on LO. Thank you!

Id also bring it up to the director and kindly state that you don’t feel comfortable with this behavior!

@Aspen: Someone else just posted about day care teachers kissing their kid and I’ll say the same thing I told her. I have worked in day cares and preschools and the thought never crossed my mind to kiss one of the kids. Nor have I ever witnessed it and if I did I would give a serious side eye. In my opinion, this is super weird and totally inappropriate. I feel like if anyone should be giving kisses, it’s parents and maybe other family members or close friends, if it’s okay with the child and parents. Second, there’s enough germ spreading going on in child care facilities, there should not be kidding to add to that. I guess my option is strong but if it was my kid, I’d be really put off.

@Aspen: I wouldn’t be comfortable with this situation at all and would ask her not to kiss my child.
I would be ok with hugs, if my LO was into it.

I’ve never seen it happen in my daycare, and I’d probably be weirded out same as you with my first. But, in the preschool room (age 1-3) my daughter got lots of snuggles and hugs etc. She is now in the pre-k (she’s 4) room where the teachers are not as affectionate. I really think she misses it and she definitely has not bonded with those teachers like she did with the preschool ones. All that to say, that I would be ok with it now - I think it helped her feel more secure and cared for when I was away. So I wouldn’t want to undermine that (unless it was mouth kisses or unwanted kisses, like PP have said)

There was one daycare teacher that kissed my daughter on the forehead a lot. My daughter cleared loved her, and I was thrilled she was so loving with my daughter, so it didn't bother me.

@youboots: Yea this. Mouth and forced, no bueno. But if she’s just kissing cheeks and forehead and he’s not upset by it (crying, trying to move away, etc) I don’t care. I’d be glad that she loves him and that he is comfortable with it.

Even if her intentions are innocent, if you are feeling uncomfortable (which I would be too) then I would say something to her directly, and if she doesn't respect your boundaries then you might need to take further action.

Mouth kisses-absolutely not. Forced kisses-no way. Cheek kisses or forehead- totally fine as long as DD is happy with it. What bugs me more is one of her teachers wears perfume and she always comes home smelling like it. DD is my first kid too but this is her 3rd year at the school.

Thanks for the feedback! I do appreciate that she seems to really like my son, but I think my issue with it is that I don’t know her at all. This is also my first baby so I’m not sure what the norms are in this setting.

I am definitely grateful that he does get such great care when I’m not there!

We had the opposite scenario - DD was wanting to kiss her teachers on the lips, so they taught her to do "nosie-nosie" (what we used to call Eskimo kisses) or kiss on the cheek. Shouldn't be awkward for daycare teachers to avoid passing germs, you'd think they would want to keep themselves healthy too!

I've seen one of Emma's daycare teachers kiss her on the cheek a few times when we leave for the day but it doesn't bother me. I'm glad they love her so much and I'm not too concerned about a cheek kiss.

I just posted something similar about unwanted kisses, but some of my center’s teachers are generally this affectionate with the children. Just this morning I addressed my concerns and preferences with the lead teacher. The convo was way more awkward for me than her. I encourage you too to talk with the teacher.

My 8 month old son has been going to daycare since he was three months old. There are two regular teachers in his room who he loves who also love him. They are excited to see him and give him hugs when I pick him up in the afternoon.

There is a teacher that fills in that I have seen in his room three times. The first time she wasn’t touching my child and we introduced ourselves. The second time, about a month ago, she gave my son a kiss in the cheek before handing him off to me at pick up. The third time, yesterday, my son was sitting in her lap when I went into the room and she was giving him multiple kisses all over his face but not on the mouth.

I feel weird about this. I’m glad she seems to really like my child but so do the regular teachers and I’ve never seen them kiss him. Has this happened to you? Is this normal? What should I do?
